Emily Godbey, associate professor of art and visual culture, presented “Photography in a 19th Century Asylum: The Insane as Photographers” at the Intersecting Photographies Symposium Oct. 13–15 at Howard University in Washington, DC. In her presentation, Godbey discussed a very early instance (1850s) of photography in the asylum. Notably, the physician in charge forbade photographs of patients; instead, photography was for patients.
