Doug Spencer, Pickard Chilton Professor and director of graduate education in the Department of Architecture, was invited by the Lebanese American University and the European Cultural Centre to participate in the International symposium on “Neoliberalism, Globalization and the Ecological Crisis,” a virtual open event held Sept. 29.

Spencer’s paper, “Greened New Worlds: On the longue durée of environmental crisis and its current modes of misrepresentation,” critically addresses the renewal of the aesthetics of the picturesque in projects of capitalist development, such as are to be found employed in projects for space colonization, urban redevelopment, and high-speed transit systems.
