“Improving Community Mobility Through Spatial Data Science, Open Data and Interactive Visualization,” a project by the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development (CED) team of Christopher J. Seeger, Bailey Hanson, Cassandra Dorius, Austin DunnErin Mullenix, Rakesh Shah and Jonathan Sherwood, was the National Association of Community Development Professionals (NACDEP) 2020 North Central Region Winner and National Runner Up in the Innovation and Creativity team category. The project examined low ridership of Marshalltown Municipal Transit’s public transit system. Beginning with minimal available data, the team created innovative methods to build an accurate dataset that was then analyzed and used to inform where system updates should be made to better serve the community.

Seeger is a professor of landscape architecture and extension landscape architect. Hanson is an extension systems analyst. Dorius is an associate professor of human development and family studies. Dunn served as a lecturer in landscape architecture during the project period. Mullenix is an extension data analyst and research director for the Iowa League of Cities. Shah is an extension full stack developer and a graduate student in business administration. Sherwood was a graduate student in urban design during the project period.
