Second named faculty position established in Iowa State University’s College of Design

September 02, 2014

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University architecture alumnus Stan Thurston, retired president, chief executive officer and board chairman of Life Care Services in Des Moines, has established the second named professorship in the ISU College of Design.

Thurston created the Stan G. Thurston Professorship in Design Build to support the recruitment and retention of Iowa State faculty who are leaders in the field of design-build, in which a single firm or contractor provides both design and construction services.

"Stan's commitment to establish this professorship will allow the college to recognize an outstanding faculty member in our Department of Architecture," said College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez.

"Named faculty positions such as the Stan G. Thurston Professorship in Design Build will allow the College of Design to maximize the impact our faculty members have in communities through their teaching and research. This is our responsibility as a world-class design college," he said.

"We deeply appreciate Stan's generosity and long-standing commitment to excellence in architecture at Iowa State."

The professorship will support Iowa State faculty of the Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs, which are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board.

"Design-build is a very important approach for developers and owners to fully understand and make the myriad of decisions involved in a successful project that will work for the developer, the owner, the contractor and the end user," Thurston said.

"This gift is made in recognition and thanks for the education and personal growth opportunities I received at Iowa State and to acknowledge the tremendous increase in educational opportunities within the College of Design."

Following graduation from Iowa State in 1969, Thurston served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1972, including a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam, and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service. He received a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration in 1974 and began his career in the residential development business in Toronto before joining Life Care Services in 1977.

Prior to his retirement in 2006, Thurston served as president, CEO and chairman of the board of LCS, which has developed many continuing-care facilities throughout the United States and manages 70 senior housing and continuing-care communities with 23,000 residents nationwide. He was the recipient of the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Seniors Housing Committee in 2007.

Thurston is a member of the ISU College of Design Advancement Council. In addition to establishing the Thurston Professorship, he has supported the college's King Pavilion addition and the College of Design Rome Program.

The professorship was established through a gift made through the Iowa State University Foundation, a private, nonprofit corporation dedicated to securing and managing gifts and grants that benefit Iowa State University.
