ISU Community Design Lab seeks community feedback at Des Moines Open Streets event Sept. 14

September 11, 2014

AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State University Community Design Lab will share an installation at an Open Streets event from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, on East Ninth Street near the intersection with Roosevelt Avenue in Des Moines.

The CDL will demonstrate how streets can include more space for pedestrians and bicycles, offer information on how alternative transportation and urban agriculture can provide more sustainable infrastructure, and gather feedback from local residents about what they'd like to see happen in their neighborhoods.

The CDL is working with the City of Des Moines' Neighborhood Development Division on a project to redesign the Southwest Ninth Street corridor. Staff members also are working with the Viva East Bank coalition to create a spacial framework for the revitalization of the Capitol East, Capitol Park and Martin Luther King Jr. Park urban core neighborhoods.

The Community Design Lab shared another installation at an event last Sunday, Sept. 7, at the intersection of Maish Avenue and Southwest Ninth Street. CDL staff spoke with several hundred participants who engaged in "voting" activities related to bike lanes, which also provided an opportunity to talk about safety issues and street traffic on Southwest Ninth, said CDL Design Fellow Courtney Long. While East Ninth Street is a narrower road in a more residential area of town, they intend to engage the public in similar conversations on traffic, safety and sustainable infrastructure, Long said.

CDL co-directors Nadia Anderson, assistant professor of architecture, and Carl Rogers, associate professor of landscape architecture, along with design fellows Long, Susan DeBlieck and Chad Hunter and graduate assistants Kristen Greteman, architecture, and Xiaofei Zhao, landscape architecture, will be at Sunday's event.
