May 30, 2014

AMES, Iowa — Following an internal search, the Iowa State University College of Design has appointed Mark Chidister to serve as its new associate dean for academic programs.

Chidister, an associate professor of integrated studio arts and the interim senior policy adviser for the College of Design, will oversee the college's undergraduate academic programs and will assist the dean, together with the associate dean for research, with programmatic development both at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

He will also provide oversight for student recruitment, retention and advising activities; faculty development programs to enhance teaching and learning; the Core Design Program, international and multicultural programs; career services and learning communities.

"Professor Chidister brings a wealth of leadership experience at the college and university levels, and he is particularly adept at navigating the university's complex administrative systems," said Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez. "He has demonstrated a tremendous capacity to build consensus around important issues and a commitment to fostering a collaborative work environment."

"I look forward to working with him to advance the innovative academic agendas and strategic initiatives in the College of Design."

Chidister will begin his appointment as associate dean on July 1. Professor Marwan Ghandour, who has served as the college's associate dean since 2010, will return to teaching full time in the Department of Architecture.

Chidister joined the ISU faculty in 1981 as an assistant professor of landscape architecture and was promoted to associate professor in 1988. His many leadership positions include interim chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture from 1992 to 1994, associate dean for academic programs in the College of Design from 1995 to 2001, and assistant to the president for budget planning and analysis from 2001 to 2006. He returned to the College of Design in 2006 to teach in the integrated studio arts department. Since 2012, he has served as the college's interim senior policy adviser, coordinating such projects as development of the college's new strategic plan.
