ISU College of Design to host summer programs for middle and high school students

AMES, Iowa — The Iowa State University College of Design, in conjunction with ISU Extension and Outreach, will offer a series of workshops for middle and high school students and a one-week residential camp for high schoolers this summer.

Explore Design!
The one-day Explore Design! workshop will explore identity, pattern, sculpture and product design using graffiti and typography as precedents. Participants will work with a wide variety of materials and techniques. The registration fee is $15 and includes all snacks, lunch and materials. Workshops will be held on the Iowa State campus in Ames and in several other locations statewide in June and July:

  • Harlan – Tuesday, June 2 (register by Thursday, May 28; note this is paper registration only, available from the Shelby County Extension Office)
  • Sidney – Wednesday, June 3 (register online by Thursday, May 28)
  • Ottumwa – Saturday, June 6 (register online by Monday, June 1)
  • Sioux CityMonday, June 15 (register online by Monday, June 8)
  • Okoboji – in partnership with the Pearson Lakes Art Center – Tuesday, June 16 (register online by Tuesday, June 9)
  • Postville – Thursday, June 18 (registration is full)

Design Innovation
In the three-day Design Innovation workshop, participants will use photography, drawing, collage and assemblage to establish a narrative and learn how one image can inspire an evolution in designs. The registration fee is $75 and includes all snacks, meals, materials and local transportation. This workshop will be offered at Iowa State in Ames:

Both the Explore Design! and Design Innovation workshops are open to students entering sixth through 12th grades in the fall as well as recent (spring 2015) high school graduates.

Design Condensed
Design Condensed is an intensive one-week camp for students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in the fall as well as spring 2015 graduates. Participants will explore the principles of two- and three-dimensional design as they apply to the design of interior spaces, architectural forms and product designs. Students will work with drawing, rendering and modeling to communicate visual information about the built and natural environment.

Classes will take place each day at the ISU College of Design in Ames. Participants will be housed at the Iowa 4-H Center in Madrid, where they can enjoy evening outdoor activities and free time exploring art and design.

The camp will be held Sunday through Saturday, June 21-27. The $575 registration fee covers all art materials, meals, local transportation and lodging, as well as two evenings of activities with Iowa State faculty members and some evening programming offered by the 4-H Center. Register online by 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 10.
