AMES, Iowa — Internationally renowned painter and Iowa State University alumna Melanie Vote will return to the Iowa State campus April 9-11 as a visiting artist and guest juror for the 2014 Senior BFA Exhibition at the ISU College of Design.

During her visit, Vote will give two formal presentations. She will speak about the New York Academy of Art at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, in room 416 of the College of Design. She will speak about her own work at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in Kocimski Auditorium, 101 Design. Both events are free and open to the public.

In her April 10 lecture, "Whatever Shall Remain? A Look at Art and Permanence," Vote will provide an intimate look into the inspiration for her work by giving reference to her heroes and loves of both contemporary and historical art. She will explore themes of impermanence, entropy and the human experience through art.

Vote also will serve as the juror for this year's all-media exhibition of artwork by 31 students who will receive bachelor of fine arts degrees in integrated studio arts from Iowa State in May, August or December.

The 2014 Senior BFA Exhibition will be on display April 7-17 in the College of Design's Gallery 181. Viewing hours will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or by special arrangement. A public reception will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 11, in the Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum and Gallery 181. Vote will announce several student awards in a brief program beginning at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception also are free and open to the public.

While at Iowa State, Vote will visit a number of classes in the College of Design and at the Design on Main facility in downtown Ames. Several pieces of her own work will be on display in the college Dean's Office, 134 Design, concurrently with the BFA exhibition.

Vote holds a bachelor of fine arts in craft design from Iowa State (1995) and a master of fine arts in painting (cum laude) from the New York Academy of Art (1998). She received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant in 2007 and was awarded residencies with Abu Dhabi Art Hub, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in 2013; Jentel, Banner, Wyo., in 2009; the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Nebraska City, Neb., in 2007 and the Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vt. (with a full fellowship from the Dodge Foundation), in 2002. She was a visiting artist at the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art in 2013.

Her work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout the U.S., Mexico and South Korea. She received the Rosenthal Foundation Best of Show Award in the 54th Art of the North East exhibition in 2003.

Vote has taught drawing and painting at Pratt Institute, The New School, New Jersey City University, York College and Hofstra New College. She is a member of the College Art Association.

Vote's visit is cosponsored by the College of Design, Department of Integrated Studio Arts, College of Design Art Club (CODAC) and Painters Anonymous.
