AMES, Iowa — Hua Pan, a Master of Fine Arts student in integrated visual arts at Iowa State University, will present a collection of work developed during her graduate studies in an exhibition at the ISU Design on Main Gallery, 203 Main St. in downtown Ames.

"Women in a Box: Women's Objectification in a Patriarchal Society" will be on display April 1-9. A public reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 3, with an artist's talk by Pan at 7 p.m.

Originally from Guiyang, China, Pan creates art installations, pattern designs, paintings and video projects inspired by her personal background and experience in China. Her work incorporates elements from fashion magazines, mannequins, condoms, QR codes and shipping boxes that have strong connections with the mass media, fashion industry and consumers.

Pan's art focuses on the sexual imbalance between women and men and the objectification of women in a patriarchal society, particularly the impact of mass media and fashion industry standards of beauty and sexual appeal on women's self-image and self-esteem.

Pan is "interested in the body for its valuable qualities, issues of identity and reflections of cultural ideals," she said. "Learning from the body, I have been able to explore a variety of issues that have stemmed from women's social status."

Pan received her bachelor's degree in Chinese linguistics and literature from North China Electric Power University, Beijing. Her work has been published in the Winter 2014 issue of the ISU Alumni Association's VISIONS magazine.

Exhibition hours are 3 to 6 p.m. Monday and Friday; 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday (closed Tuesday and Sunday). All ISU Design on Main Gallery exhibitions and events are free and open to the public.
