Architecture students take top spots in AIAS/Kawneer Frozen Music Design Competition

AMES, Iowa — Iowa State University fifth-year architecture student teams swept the top prizes in the American Institute of Architecture Students/Kawneer Frozen Music Design Competition with projects they developed in the fall 2013 ARCH 403 studio.

Samantha Dengerud, Lino Lakes, Minn.; Jin Han, Busan, South Korea, and Tyler Lundsgaard, Cherokee, Iowa, won first place ($3,000). Professor Cal Lewis was their studio instructor. Mira Irawan, Malang, Indonesia; Mark Jongman-Sereno, Lawrence, Kan., and David O'Brien, Chatham, Ill., won second place ($1,500) for "Evolutionary Urbanism." Their studio instructor was Lecturer Jungwoo Ji.

Yanzhou (Steve) Huang, Bu Ji Town, China; Meng Jiang, Nanjing, China, and Shiyuan (Claire) Zheng, Lanzhou, China, were awarded third place ($750) for "Embarcadero Jazz Garden." Ji also was their studio instructor. Zoe Bick, Davis, Calif.; Michael Madsen, Sioux City, Iowa, and Kelsey Vetter, Denison, Iowa, received an honorable mention for "The Edge." Associate Professor Mitchell Squire was their studio instructor.
