AMES, Iowa — Artwork generated from research associated with an Iowa State University Miller Faculty Fellowship will be on display Oct. 14-25 at the ISU College of Design.

A reception for "Expanding the Digital Matrix: From Virtual Monitor to the Material Realm of the Studio Arts" will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in the college's Gallery 181 and Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum. Faculty presentations about the technical aspects of their work in the show will begin at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

Exhibiting artists include Professor April Katz (printmaking) and retired Senior Lecturer JoAnn Boehmer (photography/mixed media), partners in the artist collaborative BOKA; Professor Ingrid Lilligren (ceramics); Associate Professor Chris Martin (furniture design); and Lecturer Emma Powell (photography), all from the Department of Integrated Studio Arts; and Associate Professor Paula Curran (publication design and typography), Department of Graphic Design.

Katz and her colleagues received a 2012-2013 Miller Faculty Fellowship grant to explore ways to integrate digital technologies into a majority of the university's studio art courses. They experimented with using the College of Design's laser cutters, CNC (computer numerical controlled) router and related software in combination with traditional hand processes to produce new work and develop new teaching materials.

"Through this project, we will be able to expand opportunities for a broader range of students in College of Design courses to use these technologies creatively in their coursework," Katz said.

Jennifer Nieland, manager of the college's computer labs, provided extensive technical support for the project.

Gallery 181 is located on the first floor of the College of Design building on the west side of the Iowa State campus. Exhibition hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
