ISU College of Design to honor Martha Schwartz Partners design director with Design Achievement Award

AMES, Iowa — Matthew Getch, the design director and a partner with Martha Schwartz Partners in London, is a recipient of the 2014 Design Achievement Award presented by the Iowa State University College of Design.

The award recognizes outstanding creative and professional achievements of alumni in all of the college's disciplines, which include art and design, community and regional planning, design, graphic design, industrial design, integrated studio arts, interior design and landscape architecture.

Getch received a bachelor of landscape architecture degree from Iowa State in 1998. He will be honored in absentia during Homecoming at the ISU Alumni Association's 83rd annual Honors and Awards Ceremony, 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in Benton Auditorium, Scheman Building.

After graduation from Iowa State, Getch worked as a landscape architect in Salt Lake City and Tucson. For the past decade, he has made his home in London and for seven years has been the design director with Martha Schwartz Partners, a leading international design firm dedicated to creating and refining urban landscapes and helping to ensure cities’ sustainability.

Getch's work spans from site-specific, small urban spaces to large, regional and strategic landscape planning projects in 22 different countries on four continents. His award-winning designs have included the Natural History Museum Civic Realm in London; the Detroit Riverfront; Place de la Republique in Paris; the Mosque and Museum of Religious Harmony in Tirana, Albania; Market Square in Tel Aviv; Austria’s Vienna Regional Hospital; Abu Dhabi Financial Center and the 2002 Olympic Welcome Plaza in Park City, Utah. His focus is on creating valuable public space that provides cities and residents with a unique identity and a sense of place.
