Watch for Amazon and other email scams

University email users are seeing a spike in a scam that makes threats and claims to extort email users. The information technology services security team said some emails are set up to look like they are sent from Amazon, asking for electronic payments (bitcoin) to ensure personal information from hacked accounts isn’t shared. The security team advises the use of multifactor authentication (MFA) for professional and personal logins, including Okta, ISU’s identity management platform. Users should not respond to the emails, which can be forwarded or reported to itsecurity@iastate.edu.
