New faculty orientation Aug. 15-16

New faculty members are encouraged to attend two days of orientation programming in mid-August.

The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching will host the CELT Teaching Symposium Tuesday morning, Aug. 15, at the Scheman Building. The program will highlight the best teaching practices and student support resources available at Iowa State. New faculty will learn how to prepare for a successful first semester of teaching as well as explore CELT’s services, resources and professional development opportunities. Following a hosted lunch, Tuesday afternoon will feature a faculty-focused version of University Human Resources’ Employee Orientation. These tailored sessions will cover a variety of policies and legal requirements that faculty should be aware of, including IT use and computer ethics, discrimination and harassment prevention, conflict-of-interest awareness and FERPA.

On Wednesday, Aug. 15, New Faculty Orientation will give all new faculty the opportunity to meet with one another as well as with senior leaders at Iowa State. Senior Vice President and Provost Jonathan Wickert will start by highlighting what it means to be part of a land-grant university. Presentations will address tools for faculty success, working with students, managing social media and getting a research program up and running. Lunch will be followed by a resource fair that includes information about Ames, faculty and staff associations, childcare and more. Concurrent afternoon sessions will include a panel discussion with experienced faculty on research and on teaching expectations, as well as roundtable conversations with the deans. Register online.
