Chris Vance (BFA 2000 Visual Studies), who recently created an outdoor mural for Moulton Elementary School in Des Moines, followed up with a spray-painted indoor mural to welcome students and teachers back to the building when the COVID-19 shutdown ends. Before the move to virtual instruction in universities and K-12 schools statewide, Vance worked with all 500 Moulton students as well as teachers and parents as each of them designed and created a piece of art that best demonstrated their identity. Vance and the school’s TurnAround Arts team then selected several pieces that inspired the outdoor mural, which will be revealed and installed in the next couple of weeks.
When the shutdown occurred, many of Vance’s usual art festivals and exhibitions were canceled, and he agreed to create a colorful graffiti-style mural on a blank white wall of the school so the students and teachers will have something to look forward to and be proud of when they return. The indoor mural is located on the third-floor bridge between the fifth-grade and third-grade wings; it’s also visible from the street and well-lit at night for the neighborhood to enjoy.
