The Ceramics studio in the Art & Visual Culture Department at Iowa State University offers a comprehensive ceramics curriculum, including hand-building, wheel throwing, firing kilns, glaze research, 3D printing, and introduces students to the deep history of this medium. We believe that it is important to have a strong foundation in traditional skills, while also encouraging our students to experiment and embrace new technology, as they gain confidence in their medium of choice.
Studio Fundamentals and Advanced Techniques
In the Studio Fundamentals Course students learn hand-building, firings with underglazes and Cone 6 glazes, and explore idea development. We emphasize providing a fundamental understanding of techniques and ideas so students can move into the next level of ceramics with confidence. As students’ progress through intermediate and advanced courses, personal concept development is emphasized along with advanced techniques. Throughout, we promote critical thinking developed by the hands-on process-based problem-solving involved in ceramics.
The Ceramics studio is located in room 0038, College of Design.
