Joseph Péré Danielsen

Senior, Interior Design

From: Batavia, Illinois

Study abroad semester: Spring 2016 (traveled in January)

Studied abroad at: Paris, France

Why did you decide to study abroad?

As design students, we’re encouraged to travel either through the College of Design Rome Program or other study abroad opportunities. I wanted to participate in a trip that was personally meaningful.

How did you choose the location?

I have always wanted to visit Paris. I’m interested in design and art history, and the city has greatly influenced many art movements and innovative designers. I wanted to experience the city’s architecture. And I also wanted to see if I loved Paris enough to move there! This past summer I worked for a firm in New York that has an office in Paris that I’d love to transfer to.

Where did you visit and what did you study?

We attended the 2016 Maison et Objet and Paris Déco Off (the largest international furnishings expo in the world) and toured museums and showrooms for high-end furnishings and textiles. We used the experience as inspiration for a studio project to be completed when we returned to the U.S. for the rest of the semester. We were able to select furniture, décor, artwork and fabrics to use in our projects.

What were some of the highlights of your experience?

The trip helped me practice my French. I also got a new perspective of Paris and what Parisian life is like. The best experience was attending the American Party in Paris, a party thrown every year for American designers who visit Paris for the Maison et Object exhibition. It was extremely glitzy and fabulous to rub shoulders with some of the industry’s most noteworthy professionals. The party took place at the Hotel de Ville, Paris’ city hall, which most Parisians never have the opportunity to see the inside of. It was an honor to be there.

What advice would you give others who are considering studying abroad?

Choose the program that speaks the most to you. There are so many opportunities out there; you don’t have to choose the one that everyone else is taking if you’d rather go somewhere else!
