Richards hits his stride as children's book author, muralist November 13, 2008
- Chuck Richards will sign copies of his latest book, "Critter Sitter," at the University Book Store in the Iowa State Memorial Union from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3. Richards also recently completed four commissioned paintings based on his earlier book, "Jungle Gym Jitters," for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

- Iowa State senior Andrew Kopp's bench won Best of Show in the International Woodworking Fair's Design Emphasis '08, considered the nation's premier furniture design competition for students. Two of his classmates--Ryan Seiler and James Ian Killinger--were finalists.

Hilderbrand to present P.H. Elwood Lecture Oct. 22 October 08, 2008
- Gary Hilderbrand, an award-winning landscape architect and adjunct professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, will present the P.H. Elwood Lecture in Landscape Architecture on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Iowa State University. His presentation, "Space of Trees," will be at 6 p.m. in Kocimski Auditorium, College of Design.

Woodwork Magazine features ISU design students, faculty October 07, 2008
- The current issue (December 2008) of Woodwork Magazine features a two-page spread of work by students of Chris Martin, Iowa State University associate professor of art and design. The photo gallery shows work by eight BFA and MFA students in Martin's furniture design courses. And the magazine's back cover features a piece by Martin. His article describes processes involved in creating a desk inspired by Czech Cubism.

Environmental sculptor Dougherty at Iowa State Oct. 8 September 25, 2008
- Internationally renowned environmental sculptor Patrick Dougherty will speak at Iowa Stat University Wednesday, Oct. 8, as a part of the College of Design's 30th anniversary celebration. Dougherty's presentation, "Building Sculpture on Location: A Melding of Design and Community," will be at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

ISU students design "green" home for Des Moines' west side September 12, 2008
- Groundbreaking took place Tuesday, Sept. 9, for two sustainable "green" homes on Des Moines' west side. The project by Community Housing Development Corporation will provide homes for low- to moderate-income families. One of the homes, at 1622 Forest Ave., was designed by Iowa State University architecture and interior design students in a spring 2008 studio led by Nadia Anderson, lecturer in architecture. Downtown Waukee doubles as classroom September 02, 2008
- A story in today's (Sept. 2, 2008) Des Moines Register highlights work by a graduate-level community and regional planning class from Iowa State University that will help create a downtown master plan for the city of Waukee. Led by assistant professor Monica Haddad, the class will use input from residents and business owners to suggest how and where downtown Waukee should expand, putting particular focus on what kinds of businesses the city's oldest commercial area should try to attract. The project is a part of the ISU College of Design's PLaCE (Partnering Landscape and Community Enhancement) program.

Sculptures reflect frustration with Katrina response August 29, 2008
- On the third anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, a story in the Friday, Aug. 29 edition of The Tribune (Ames, IA) relates the journey of Iowa State MFA graduate Michael Stanley, who lost everything in the storm but made a new start in Iowa. He is using his art to express both frustration over the government response in the wake of the disaster and hope that by working together, the community can recover.

Textile artist to receive Christian Petersen Design Award August 19, 2008
- The College of Design will present the 2008 Christian Petersen Design Award to textile artist Priscilla Sage, who taught at ISU from 1984 to 2000. She will be honored during the college's annual welcome reception, 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at the Brunnier Art Museum. A retrospective exhibition of Sage's work, "Priscilla Sage: Fifty Years of Sculpting, 1958-2008," will be at the Brunnier from Aug. 26, 2008, through Jan. 5, 2009.

Hurricane Katrina survivor turns anger into art at ISU August 14, 2008
- Three years after Michael Stanley lost his home, studio, artwork and graduate school in Hurricane Katrina, he has earned his MFA at Iowa State and will begin teaching here in the fall. His thesis exhibition, "Katrina's Crescendo," comprises two kinetic sculptures that are made from Katrina refuse and express his experiences before, during and after the hurricane. It's an emotional and artistic journey that has carried him from a place of anger and bitterness to a sense of purpose.

- Iowa State graphic design student Joe Kutilek won an internship at the CW TV Network when his 25-second, digital motion-graphics promotional spot for "Gossip Girl" took first place in a national college competition, "Making the Cut." Grant to help LA dept., Ames address College Creek issues June 06, 2008

Solar Decathlon team shares Interlock House concept May 22, 2008
- The Iowa State University Solar Decathlon team on May 3 unveiled the design of its Interlock House, one of 20 projects competing in the US Department of Energy's 2009 Solar Decathlon. Since 2002, the competition has promoted research and development of green building technologies, particularly the use of solar energy.

Whiteford to lead search for College of Design dean May 09, 2008
- A 12-member committee is beginning the search for a new dean of the ISU College of Design. The search committee is chaired by Michael Whiteford, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Whiteford said the committee's goal is to name a new dean by the end of spring semester 2009. The successful candidate will succeed Mark Engelbrecht, who assumed leadership of the college in 1994 and will step down in June 2009.

Three design faculty earn promotion, tenure May 08, 2008
- The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approved tenure and/or promotions for 60 Iowa State University faculty members May 1. Kate Schwennsen, College of Design associate dean for academic programs, and Roger Baer, chair of the art and design department, both were promoted to the rank of professor (already tenured). Jason Alread, assistant professor of architecture, was promoted to associate professor with tenure.

- Christopher Seeger, assistant professor of landscape architecture and ISU Extension landscape architect, received the 2008 Award of Excellence from the Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and a Merit Award in Communication from the ASLA Central States Conference in April. The awards recognize his development of an interactive online geospatial tool used by a Seattle design firm to collect public input at a series of charrettes focusing on infrastructure and design plans for the city of Lake Forest Park, Wash. Planning professor Taylor receives national leadership award May 06, 2008
- Gary Taylor, assistant professor and extension specialist in community and regional planning, received the Chapter Presidents Council 2008 Leadership Award for Chapter Professional Development Officer Recognition from the American Planning Association April 30 at its national conference in Las Vegas. He was honored for his leadership and dedication to training the professional and citizen planners of Iowa. In the past three years, more than 1,600 local officials have attended his workshops on issues related to land-use planning and zoning.

May graduate headed for international art world of Sotheby's April 30, 2008
- Growing up in Odebolt, Iowa State University Hixson Scholar Kate Brown overcame 14 years in speech therapy. Now she is ending up right where she wants to be--on the threshold of a career in the international art world. After graduating on May 10 with a BFA in integrated studio arts, she heads to Sotheby's Institute of Art in London for her master's degree. She plans to pursue a career in preventive conservation.

- For Chris and Tammi Martin, joining the Peace Corps is the assignment of a lifetime. Chris, associate professor of art and design, and Tammi, administrative specialist in the Center for Crops Utilization Research, depart June 7 for two years of service in Ghana. Chris will teach art and Tammi will teach computer literacy.

Design faculty team honored with creative achievement award April 08, 2008
- A team of Iowa State faculty, representing all four College of Design departments, has received a 2007-2008 Creative Achievement Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The team was cited for development of Design Science, an experimental course intended to introduce students to the fundamental relationship between science and design in their first year of college.

Faculty, students part of plant biology video game team February 20, 2008
- Faculty and students with College of Design connections are part of a multidisciplinary research team that's creating a new educational 3D video game. Meta!Blast is designed to give high school and college students an interactive approach to understand the inner workings of a plant cell. The project includes work by Steven Herrnstadt, professor of art and design; graduate students Trent Grover, integrated visual arts; Denise Bacher, human computer interaction (based in the art and design department); and Trevor Brown, who graduated in December with a bachelor's degree in biological and pre-medical illustration (a joint program of the College of Design and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences).

Eggshells are small pleasures in Lilligren's exhibition February 05, 2008
- Exercising her "art" muscles by working in the studio daily during 2007, art and design professor Ingrid Lilligren created 243 collages using eggshells and dry pastels. Although identical in size and structure, the "Small Pleasures" are as diverse as the colors of life. They will be exhibited and sold Feb. 9-14 at Lilligren's studio in downtown Ames. All proceeds go to local organizations that help people who don't have enough to eat.

ISU to compete in 2009 Solar Decathlon January 24, 2008
- The U.S. Department of Energy has selected Iowa State as one of 20 teams from four countries (United States, Canada, Germany and Spain) to compete in the fourth Solar Decathlon in Washington, DC. Iowa State's is the first Solar Decathlon team from Iowa. Ulrike Passe, assistant professor of architecture in the College of Design, is heading the effort, which involves faculty and students from 11 departments in five colleges.

Design pavilion addition to be named for Steve and Barb King September 19, 2007
- The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, on Tuesday (Sept. 18) approved Iowa State University's request to name the College of Design Foundations Pavilion the King Pavilion. The name recognizes alumni Steven and Barbara King, Maple Plain, Minn., who provided the lead commitment of $1.5 million for the new $6.25 million facility. Ceremonial groundbreaking for the 23,500-gross-square-foot addition was Sept. 7.

Applications for 2008 Community Visioning Program due Oct. 1 September 11, 2007
- The Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program is accepting applications for the 2008 program. Eligible communities are those with populations of fewer than 10,000, existing transportation-related issues and a committee of volunteers willing to dedicate their time and talent to the visioning process. Also, communities that completed the program more than four years ago can reapply for additional assistance. Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 1.

Graphic design student leaves mark at Memorial Union August 08, 2007
- ISU senior Greg Wohlwend's art is in the entrance of the south addition to the Memorial Union on the Iowa State University campus. The work represents the eight colleges on campus and was inspired by and created to look similar to the zodiac motif in the floor of the building's north entrance to Gold Star Hall.

College of Design at the Des Moines Arts Festival June 28, 2007
- The College of Design will again have a presence at the Des Moines Arts Festival June 29 through July 1. The college's tent will be on the north side of Grand Avenue, between 13th and 14th streets. Iowa State also will be represented in the "Emerging Iowa Artist" booths on the east end of Grand. Twelve of the 25 featured exhibitors are current ISU students or recent graduates.

Two ISU College of Design students awarded Fulbright Grants May 30, 2007
- Two Iowa State University College of Design seniors are among four applicants from Iowa State who have received Fulbright Grants to pursue international projects in 2007-08. The awards offer one academic year of study, research, or teaching assistantship experience in the country of the applicant’s choice. Cristina Rodriguez, Camuy, Puerto Rico, who earned her bachelor of architecture degree in May, and architecture senior Aaron Johnson, Excelsior, Minn., who will graduate in August, were awarded the grants this month.

Students create furniture from tree felled by campus tornado March 28, 2007
- College of Design students in Chris Martin's furniture design class created benches, desks and a lectern for the new Christian Petersen Art Museum using wood from a State Record Scarlet Oak. The tree was felled by an F1 tornado that hit the Iowa State University campus Sept. 8, 2005.

Thomas Galloway memorial service March 16 at Georgia Tech March 13, 2007
- Thomas D. Galloway, former dean of the Iowa State University College of Design, died March 11. He had been dean of the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta since 1992. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 16, at the Robert Ferst Center for the Arts on the Georgia Tech campus. A reception will follow at the College of Architecture Atrium, West Architecture Building. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dean Thomas D. Galloway Memorial Fund for the College of Architecture in care of the Georgia Tech Foundation.

'Bottle sock' encourages interactive recycling February 08, 2007
- This was no ordinary recycling bin. It was a five-story "bottle sock"—a tube of chicken wire mesh supported by bicycle rims in the Design building atrium. Last semester, in just six weeks, the tube filled one and a half times, collecting 4,757 cans and plastic bottles. Constructed by students who belong to the Iowa Chapter of Architecture for Humanity, the sock kicked off a recycling campaign on campus.

Jones, Shao honored at fall convocation September 11, 2006
- Brenda Jones, associate professor of art and design, and Paul Shao, professor of architecture in the College of Design, will be among those honored at Iowa State's annual convocation, which begins at 3:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 11, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. President Gregory Geoffroy will speak briefly on the academic year ahead, and university awards will be presented to about 50 faculty and staff. Jones (who is teaching in Rome this semester) will receive the Regents Award for Faculty Excellence, which recognizes a faculty member who is an outstanding university citizen and who has rendered significant service to iowa State University and/or the state of Iowa. Shao will receive the International Service Award, which recognizes a faculty member for outstanding international service in teaching, research or administration, within the United States or abroad.

Shao marks completion of Chinese pavilion in Des Moines August 23, 2006
- Built as the anchor of the Chinese Cultural Center of America's Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens that are scheduled to be completed in 2007, the $1.6 million three-story Chinese pavilion is designed to "create the all-encompassing sensual and spiritual experience," said Paul Shao, Iowa State University architecture professor and the center's president.

- Iowa State University researchers, including the College of Design's Chiu-Shui Chan, say more than $4 million in equipment upgrades to C6—Iowa State' six-sided virtual reality room—are essential to their research. Chan, a professor of architecture, has used C6 to develop 3-D models of buildings, cities and workplaces. The upgrades will help him produce greater realism and improve the interactive speed of his applications.

Community Visioning Program receives national honor April 20, 2006
- Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program receives a national award April 25 from the American Planning Association. The 10-year-old program has provided planning and landscape design assistance to 113 Iowa towns with populations of less than 10,000. The program brings together ISU design students, landscape architects and town residents in a participatory planning process. ISU manages the program in partnership with Trees Forever. It is funded by Iowa DOT.

Design students put finishing touches on installed Unity Mural August 09, 2005
- It's taken 1,200 student-hours to create. And it's almost done. Four Iowa State University student artists are putting the finishing touches on their 20-foot by 8-foot mural near the entrance to the College of Design. Working 18-hour days since Feb. 11 in GMA's Times Square studio, Berg has re-created landmark buildings with 178, 000 cards--one for each victim of the natural disaster. - Iowa State University's undergraduate programs in architecture, landscape architecture and interior design are among the best in the nation, according to a survey by DesignIntelligence. DesignIntelligence is a monthly publication for leaders in design professions. The magazine's annual ranking, "America's Best Architecture and Design Schools," is the only national college ranking survey that focuses exclusively on design.

Iowa towns recognized for park and playground improvements November 29, 2004
- A program that helps improve the quality and design of community parks across north central Iowa has recognized park and playground projects in eight towns. Christopher Seeger, assistant professor of landscape architecture and ISU Extension landscape architect, is one of the judges. The North Iowa Area Development (NIAD) Park Improvement Program could be the beginning of a statewide program.

Ecologist and author David Orr to speak at ISU Sept. 10 September 02, 2004
- Environmental educator and author David Orr will present Iowa State
University's P.H. Elwood Lecture in Landscape Architecture at 7 p.m.,
Friday, Sept. 10 in the Kocimski Auditorium, College of Design. Orr's talk,
"Patriotism, Politics and the Environment in an Age of Terror," is drawn from
his recent book of the same title. He advocates a coherent environmental
agenda, vigorous public discussion of the issues and an increased
emphasis on environmental study in higher education.

- Harvey Molotch, author of the award-winning book, "Where Stuff Comes From," will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union at Iowa State University. Molotch's presentation, "How We Get Through Airport Security: Cities, Product Design and Where Stuff Comes From," will focus on the world of product development to show how complex interactions of tastes, technologies, corporate practices and local preferences generate the ordinary objects of everyday life. Molotch's lecture is a College of Design 25th Anniversary Lecture. It is sponsored by the College of Design, the sociology department and the Committee on Lectures, which is funded by the Government of the Student Body.

Computer game design class develops a winner February 09, 2004
- Some Iowa State University students are doing what kids everywhere hope to do
when they grow up: They're creating computer games. The students are in
GameDevClass, a new, independent-study course conceived by Steven
Herrnstadt, associate professor of art and design. After only one semester, the
new course has scored a victory. A game designed and developed in the class
will receive international recognition at the Independent Games Festival (IGF) in
San Jose, Calif., in March.

Human-computer interaction pioneer Brenda Laurel will speak at ISU Feb. 9 February 03, 2004
- Brenda Laurel, a Silicon Valley veteran and pioneer in the area of human-computer interaction, will speak at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 9, in the Sun Room of the Memorial Union at Iowa State University. - Two renowned kinetic artists will share their ideas on materials innovation in

ISU design students will use steamroller to make art October 21, 2003
- This Friday, Oct. 24, Iowa State University art and design students will pave the way for a new form of expression: steamroller art. Students will use a road builder's steamroller to create large-scale prints on oversized woodblocks. The printmaking session will take place at Rueter's, a construction and equipment dealer at 5815 W. Lincoln Way, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Stieglitz named 2003-2004 Distinguished Arts and Humanities Scholar July 07, 2003
- Mary Stieglitz, professor of art and design, has been named the Distinguished
Arts and Humanities Scholar for 2003-04 in Iowa State University's new Center
for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities. The award provides a full semester's
leave (spring 2004, in this case) for an outstanding scholar in the arts and
humanities. Each scholar is free to pursue his or her own research interests and
is asked to present one public lecture on campus. Stieglitz's lecture has been
scheduled for March 9. Details will be announced as they are finalized.

Leading Chinese painter to teach ISU workshop, June 16-27 June 10, 2003
- Renowned Chinese painter Li Aiguo will teach a painting workshop at Iowa State University, June 16-27. The workshop will be on gong bi hua, a type of traditional Chinese, realistic painting that involves special paper and inks made of animal, vegetable and mineral compounds. Li is a professor of art at Capital Normal University, Beijing, and director of the Gong Bi Painting Society of China. The workshop will be from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the College of Design's private painting studio, room 246. Participants may register for three undergraduate or graduate credits, non-credit, or eight continuing education units.

Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) 2003 Environmental Excellence

Osterberg leads project to produce guidebook on accessibility design standards April 01, 2003
- A new, illustrated guidebook developed at Iowa State University will help architects, landscape architects and building code officials ensure that new and existing buildings are accessible to all people. Arvid Osterberg, the professor of architecture who led the project, said the "Access for Everyone" guide provides the most current standards for planning and designing accessible buildings and sites. The standards are based on the 1998 and 2002 Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines.

Harvard professor Howard Gardner to present "Art, Science and Interdisciplinary Thought" Jan. 28 at ISU January 10, 2003
- Howard Gardner, a professor internationally known for his theory of multiple intelligences and his efforts to reform schools, will present a lecture on "Art, Science and Interdisciplinary Thought," at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in Stephens Auditorium at Iowa State University.
Gardner is the John H. and Elisabeth A. Hobbs Professor in Cognition and Education at the Graduate School in Education, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. He also is an adjunct professor of neurology at the Boston University School of Medicine.

Visiting artist shares unique ceramics techniques at ISU Nov. 9-11 November 07, 2002
- Nationally known ceramist Carol Molly Prier, Point Reyes, Calif., will visit Iowa State's College of Design from Nov. 9 to Nov. 11 to share her expertise in methods adapted from traditional Native American ways of making pottery. - Iowa State University art and design students will haul out the heavy machinery to complete a printmaking project on Friday, Oct. 25. Students in April Katz's relief printmaking class and members of the University Print Society will use a steamroller to create large-scale prints on oversized woodblocks. 'Imagining This Land' project sponsors winter poetry reading January 24, 2002
- Eight Ames community members will read their favorite winter poems during a special event Friday, Jan. 25, at the Ames Public Library.
"Winter Readings" will begin at 7 p.m. in the library?s Farwell T. Brown Auditorium. The event is sponsored by "Imagining This Land: Poetry as Public Art and Community Building Tool," a nonprofit public arts project initiated by Joni Palmer, assistant professor of landscape architecture. The project is intended to bring the works of Iowa poets and Iowa-themed poetry to the public in a new, more accessible way. It is supported in part by a grant from the Iowa Arts Council. [More...]

Freshmen design students get creative at competition January 14, 2002
- Iowa State University students will give their creative juices a
workout at an upcoming College of Design competition.
Design's first Freshmen Creativity Competition and Exhibition will
be held Jan. 16-23 in the college's atrium. Five cash prizes, ranging
from $50 to $1,000, will be awarded.
