College of Design news since May 10, 2007- Three design faculty earn promotion, tenure May 08, 2008
- The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approved tenure and/or promotions for 60 Iowa State University faculty members May 1. Kate Schwennsen, College of Design associate dean for academic programs, and Roger Baer, chair of the art and design department, both were promoted to the rank of professor (already tenured). Jason Alread, assistant professor of architecture, was promoted to associate professor with tenure.
- Landscape architecture prof earns state, regional honors May 07, 2008
- Christopher Seeger, assistant professor of landscape architecture and ISU Extension landscape architect, received the 2008 Award of Excellence from the Iowa Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and a Merit Award in Communication from the ASLA Central States Conference in April. The awards recognize his development of an interactive online geospatial tool used by a Seattle design firm to collect public input at a series of charrettes focusing on infrastructure and design plans for the city of Lake Forest Park, Wash. - Planning professor Taylor receives national leadership award May 06, 2008
- Gary Taylor, assistant professor and extension specialist in community and regional planning, received the Chapter Presidents Council 2008 Leadership Award for Chapter Professional Development Officer Recognition from the American Planning Association April 30 at its national conference in Las Vegas. He was honored for his leadership and dedication to training the professional and citizen planners of Iowa. In the past three years, more than 1,600 local officials have attended his workshops on issues related to land-use planning and zoning.
- May graduate headed for international art world of Sotheby's April 30, 2008
- Growing up in Odebolt, Iowa State University Hixson Scholar Kate Brown overcame 14 years in speech therapy. Now she is ending up right where she wants to be--on the threshold of a career in the international art world. After graduating on May 10 with a BFA in integrated studio arts, she heads to Sotheby's Institute of Art in London for her master's degree. She plans to pursue a career in preventive conservation.
- Iowa State Solar Decathlon Team to reveal schematic design April 28, 2008
- The Iowa State University Solar Decathlon Team will reveal the schematic design of the Interlock House, its purely solar-powered home, at an unveiling from 5 to 8 p.m. May 3 in Hughes Auditorium at Reiman Gardens. Students and faculty will be available to answer questions about the design, the 2009 Solar Decathlon competition and the work done by the Iowa State team to date. [More...]
- ISU couple head for Peace Corps stint in Ghana April 24, 2008
- For Chris and Tammi Martin, joining the Peace Corps is the assignment of a lifetime. Chris, associate professor of art and design, and Tammi, administrative specialist in the Center for Crops Utilization Research, depart June 7 for two years of service in Ghana. Chris will teach art and Tammi will teach computer literacy.
- ISU students 'design-build' cabin in South Sioux City park April 17, 2008
- Twenty students majoring in architecture, landscape architecture and interior design collaborated on a semester-long project to design and build a cabin for Scenic Park Campground in South Sioux City. Read more in an April 17 article in the Sioux City Journal online.
- Fifteen design students, alumni are Emerging Iowa Artists April 15, 2008
- For the sixth consecutive year, Iowa State will be well represented among the Emerging Iowa Artists in the Des Moines Arts Festival, June 27-29 at Western Gateway Park. Fifteen of the 24 emerging artists selected for this year's event are College of Design students or recent graduates. [More...]

- Design faculty team honored with creative achievement award April 08, 2008
- A team of Iowa State faculty, representing all four College of Design departments, has received a 2007-2008 Creative Achievement Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The team was cited for development of Design Science, an experimental course intended to introduce students to the fundamental relationship between science and design in their first year of college.
- Palermo receives national recognition April 08, 2008
- Iowa State architecture professor Gregory Palermo is one of three in the nation to receive the Distinguished Professor Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. The award was was presented at the ACSA annual meeting in Houston in March.
- Design College part of sesquicentennial video series March 24, 2008
- Mediacom's Connections 22 access channel will air a three-part video series this week in honor of Iowa State's sesquicentennial. "Iowa State University: The 150-Year Adventure" is hosted by KCCI news anchor and ISU alum Kevin Cooney. It will air from 7 to 8 p.m. March 25, 26 and 27 on channel 22 in Ames and Des Moines. - College of Design remembers Barbara King March 07, 2008
- Iowa State University alumna Barbara King, 61, dear friend and benefactor of the ISU College of Design, died at home March 4 after a seven-month battle with cancer. A celebration of her life will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at Landscape Structures, the company she co-founded in 1971 with her husband, Steven King, in Delano, Minn. [More...]
- Planning student part of Research in the Capitol, March 10 March 04, 2008
- Bethany Wilcoxon, ISU senior in community and regional planning, will present a research poster to lawmakers Monday, March 10, in the rotunda of the state capitol building in Des Moines. Wilcoxon is among 20 Iowa State University undergraduate students selected to participate in "Research in the Capitol." She is the only representative from the College of Design. [More...]

- Students from West Des Moines, Solon and Altoona took top honors in "Collective Perspective," the 2008 BFA Senior Student Exhibition at the Iowa State University College of Design in February. [More...]
- Faculty, students part of plant biology video game team February 20, 2008
- Faculty and students with College of Design connections are part of a multidisciplinary research team that's creating a new educational 3D video game. Meta!Blast is designed to give high school and college students an interactive approach to understand the inner workings of a plant cell. The project includes work by Steven Herrnstadt, professor of art and design; graduate students Trent Grover, integrated visual arts; Denise Bacher, human computer interaction (based in the art and design department); and Trevor Brown, who graduated in December with a bachelor's degree in biological and pre-medical illustration (a joint program of the College of Design and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences).
- Eggshells are small pleasures in Lilligren's exhibition February 05, 2008
- Exercising her "art" muscles by working in the studio daily during 2007, art and design professor Ingrid Lilligren created 243 collages using eggshells and dry pastels. Although identical in size and structure, the "Small Pleasures" are as diverse as the colors of life. They will be exhibited and sold Feb. 9-14 at Lilligren's studio in downtown Ames. All proceeds go to local organizations that help people who don't have enough to eat.
- ISU to compete in 2009 Solar Decathlon January 24, 2008
- The U.S. Department of Energy has selected Iowa State as one of 20 teams from four countries (United States, Canada, Germany and Spain) to compete in the fourth Solar Decathlon in Washington, DC. Iowa State's is the first Solar Decathlon team from Iowa. Ulrike Passe, assistant professor of architecture in the College of Design, is heading the effort, which involves faculty and students from 11 departments in five colleges.
- Three ISU design programs among nation's best January 10, 2008
- Iowa State's programs in landscape architecture, architecture and interior design continue to be among the nation's best, according to a survey of practitioners by DesignIntelligence, a bimonthly publication for leaders in design professions.
- Design Extension offers GIS Short Courses January 09, 2008
- The ISU Extension GIS Geospatial Technology Program will offer a new series of hands-on short courses in geographic information systems from January through May 2008. This new series brings new tutorials and exercises with more precision and pertinence for community planners and other public officials seeking to advance their skills in GIS applications.
- Graphic design students win national competition December 07, 2007
- Two ISU graphic design students placed first and second in a national competition for 30-second video public service announcements for the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance.

- The College of Design's Design West studio in Sioux City is featured in AIArchitect This Week, Nov. 30, 2007.
- Palermo receives AIA Iowa's Educator Award November 01, 2007
- Gregory Palermo, professor and associate chair for undergraduate education in the Iowa State University department of architecture, received the Educator Award from the Iowa Chapter of the American Institute of Architects at its fall convention in Des Moines. Award recipients have positively influenced a large number and wide range of students, are forward-thinking and integrate other areas of expertise into their teaching.
- Iowa State student's digital museum earns national honors October 31, 2007
- ISU senior Grant Thompson, who will receive bachelor's degrees in landscape architecture and horticulture in December, won a national award in the American Society of Landscape Architects Student Competition for his Digital Art on Campus Project.
- Elwood Lecturer to discuss wartime gardens Oct. 12 October 04, 2007
- Landscape architecture professor and author Kenneth Helphand will present the Iowa State University department of landscape architecture's annual P.H. Elwood Lecture at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in Kocimski Auditorium, College of Design. The lecture is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow, as well as the opening reception for the Rome Urban Design Summer Studio 2007 Exhibition in Gallery 181.
- Design pavilion addition to be named for Steve and Barb King September 19, 2007
- The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, on Tuesday (Sept. 18) approved Iowa State University's request to name the College of Design Foundations Pavilion the King Pavilion. The name recognizes alumni Steven and Barbara King, Maple Plain, Minn., who provided the lead commitment of $1.5 million for the new $6.25 million facility. Ceremonial groundbreaking for the 23,500-gross-square-foot addition was Sept. 7.
- ISU Design West grand opening set for Sept. 22 in Sioux City September 17, 2007
- The Iowa State University College of Design and Sioux City Great Places Committee will host a grand opening celebration for the ISU Design West Studio, 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, in Sioux City. The studio facility is at 1014-1/2 Fourth St. The event will begin with a brief news conference followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours of the facility.
- Dake exhibition featured in Tribune arts column September 13, 2007
- An exhibition by Dennis Dake, professor of art and design, at his alma mater, Upper Iowa University, is featured in Carole Horowitz's Sept. 13 arts column in the Tribune.
- Applications for 2008 Community Visioning Program due Oct. 1 September 11, 2007
- The Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program is accepting applications for the 2008 program. Eligible communities are those with populations of fewer than 10,000, existing transportation-related issues and a committee of volunteers willing to dedicate their time and talent to the visioning process. Also, communities that completed the program more than four years ago can reapply for additional assistance. Applications must be postmarked by Oct. 1.
- College of Design to break ground for addition Sept. 7 August 28, 2007
- A ceremonial groundbreaking for the pavilion addition to the Iowa State University College of Design building will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, on the north side of the building.
- Leslie pens book on Iowa State Fair history August 14, 2007
- In "Iowa State Fair: Country Comes to Town," Iowa State University associate professor of architecture Thomas Leslie uses the fair's buildings as a starting point for a cultural history of the fair as an intersection between industry, technology and design. Leslie will be at the ISU state fair exhibit to sign books, 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18.
- Design for the urban frontier August 13, 2007
- Iowa State University Extension is taking design to the urban frontier -- with two new outreach centers for urban design, one in downtown Perry and the other in downtown Sioux City. The projects bring together Iowa State University College of Design student outreach and ISU Extension Community and Economic Development programming.
- Graphic design student leaves mark at Memorial Union August 08, 2007
- ISU senior Greg Wohlwend's art is in the entrance of the south addition to the Memorial Union on the Iowa State University campus. The work represents the eight colleges on campus and was inspired by and created to look similar to the zodiac motif in the floor of the building's north entrance to Gold Star Hall.
- Burl Parks memorial service Aug. 3 in Arkansas August 03, 2007
- Burl A. Parks, 85, former associate professor of landscape architecture and regional planning and extension faculty member at Iowa State University, died July 24 in Phoenix. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at First United Methodist Church in Bella Vista, AR. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1801 Forest Hills Blvd., Ste. 200, Bella Vista, AR, 72715.
- ISU Design West unveiled in Sioux City July 26, 2007
- The July 26 Sioux City Journal online edition features a story on ISU Design West, a new satellite facility of the Iowa State University College of Design.
- Town/Craft to host open house Aug. 7 July 26, 2007
- Town/Craft, a center created to help small communities envision a sustainable future, will open its doors to the public on Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Perry. Town/Craft is a collaboration of the Iowa State University College of Design, ISU Extension, and Hometown Perry, Iowa. The grand opening will include a brief program, refreshments and guided tours of the new facility. [More...]

- The July 20 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education picks up on the story of Iowa State University wood design professor Chris Martin and students who built furniture for the new Christian Petersen Art Museum from a Scarlet Oak tree downed by a 2005 campus tornado.

- The August issue of American Style magazine features a photo and story about ISU associate professor Chris Martin and students who designed furniture for the Christian Petersen Art Museum using wood from a Scarlet Oak downed by a tornado that hit campus in 2005.
- College of Design at the Des Moines Arts Festival June 28, 2007
- The College of Design will again have a presence at the Des Moines Arts Festival June 29 through July 1. The college's tent will be on the north side of Grand Avenue, between 13th and 14th streets. Iowa State also will be represented in the "Emerging Iowa Artist" booths on the east end of Grand. Twelve of the 25 featured exhibitors are current ISU students or recent graduates.
- Two ISU College of Design students awarded Fulbright Grants May 30, 2007
- Two Iowa State University College of Design seniors are among four applicants from Iowa State who have received Fulbright Grants to pursue international projects in 2007-08. The awards offer one academic year of study, research, or teaching assistantship experience in the country of the applicant’s choice. Cristina Rodriguez, Camuy, Puerto Rico, who earned her bachelor of architecture degree in May, and architecture senior Aaron Johnson, Excelsior, Minn., who will graduate in August, were awarded the grants this month.

- Jorge Encarnacion, an Iowa State University graduate student in architecture, was awarded the Beyond Illumination Scholarship at LIGHTFAIR 2007, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) annual trade show and conference, held in New York City this month.
- Clapp named 2006-07 College Adviser of the Year May 24, 2007
- Tara Lynne Clapp, assistant professor of community and regional planning in the Iowa State University College of Design, has been named the college's 2006-07 Adviser of the Year. Each college at Iowa State selects a College Adviser of the Year. In addition, the Office of the Provost selects two University Advisers of the Year. A display will honor the recipients on the Memorial Union ground floor during June.
