At its April 24 meeting in Council Bluffs, the state Board of Regents approved promotion and tenure awards for three Iowa State University College of Design faculty members for the 2014-15 academic year. Carlton Basmajian was promoted from assistant professor to associate professor with tenure in community and regional planning. Associate professors Teresa Paschke and Chuck Richards were promoted to professor (already tenured) in integrated studio arts. Promotions take effect Aug. 16, 2014. [More...]

Twelve senior students honored in ISU College of Design’s annual BFA exhibition

Twelve Iowa State University College of Design students took top honors in the 2014 Senior BFA Exhibition on view through Thursday, April 17, in the college's Gallery 181. The show features 85 artworks in a variety of media by 31 students who will receive bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degrees in integrated studio arts in May, August or December this year. Internationally renowned painter and Iowa State alumna Melanie Vote served as the juror for student awards. Edison Moody, Des Moines, won best in show for his oil painting titled "Encounter." Barbara Caldwell, associate professor of integrated studio arts and art education in the College of Design at Iowa State University, received the 2014 Ziegfeld Service Award from the United States Society for Education through Art (USSEA) March 30 at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Convention in San Diego, Calif. ISU design students head to Peru to build micro-library

Students from the Iowa State University College of Design and the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences (UPC), Lima, are working with a Lima community organization to develop a micro-library for the El Carmen neighborhood in Comas, one of the capital city's many informal suburbs. Design students to share work inspired by Paris visit

For five days in January, a small group of students from Iowa State University's College of Design rubbed shoulders with professional interior designers, interior design manufacturers and design publication editors from around the world who gathered in France for the annual Maison et Objet Paris and Paris Decó Off—interior design's equivalent of Fashion Week. The students—seven from the undergraduate interior design program and one from the graduate industrial design program— were part of a two-credit studio workshop and study-abroad course taught by Lee Cagley, professor and chair of the ISU interior design department. The Iowa State University College of Design will host Maryland-based custom electric guitarmaker Peter Malinoski as a visiting artist-in- residence Feb. 3-7. He will share examples of his work in a public presentation at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, in 2019 Morrill Hall. Also during his residency, Malinoski will demonstrate the making of an electric guitar from beginning to end in a workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily in the industrial design shop in the Armory. Iowa State graduate students help Des Moines neighborhoods plan for change

Graduate students in Jane Rongerude's community and regional planning studio have been helping two of Des Moines' oldest and most diverse neighborhoods plan for their next two decades of change. The students will present the plans to the neighborhood associations in February. It's the first round of presentations in a two-month approval process with the plan and zoning commission, city council and county board of supervisors. When a debilitating stroke robbed him of his ability to speak, Steven Nissen, formerly a professor of animal science at Iowa State University, found a new way to express himself through art. Nissen will share this journey of self-rediscovery through "Aphasia: Paintings by Dr. Steven Nissen," an exhibition at the ISU College of Design's Design on Main Gallery, 203 Main St. in downtown Ames. The show, which will feature about 20 acrylic paintings on canvas, will open with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24. The work may be viewed by appointment Jan. 25 through Feb. 4.
