Design student wins campus photography contest November 05, 2009
Following a month of community voting, Katherine Kelly Moore, a first-year student in the College of Design, won the second annual "I Love Campus Art" photography contest sponsored by the University Museums. Moore will receive a poster of her winning photograph, which featured Bruce White's "Carom" sculpture located near the Black Engineering Building. The limited-edition poster also will be for sale in the museum store on the second floor of the Scheman Building beginning Dec. 1. [Link...]
Honey Creek State Park is new home for solar house October 27, 2009
Iowa State University's student-designed and built solar house is being installed at its permanent location at Honey Creek Resort State Park at Rathbun Lake in southern Iowa. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has purchased the 800-square-foot, energy-efficient, solar-powered Interlock House for use as an interpretive center at the park. Iowa State also will have access to the building for energy performance monitoring. The house recently took 12th place in the US Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition in Washington, DC. Lewis receives AIA Iowa Medal of Honor October 26, 2009
Calvin F. Lewis, professor and chair of the Iowa State University department of architecture, received the Medal of Honor from the Iowa Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Iowa) at the Central States Region/AIA Iowa Annual Convention in Des Moines on Oct. 16. The award recognizes an AIA Iowa member for distinguished service to the architecture profession. [More...]
Schwennsen receives AIA Iowa Educator Award October 21, 2009

Iowa State places 12th in US DOE's Solar Decathlon October 19, 2009
The Iowa State University Solar Decathlon Team's Interlock House finished in 12th place in the U.S. DOE's Solar Decathlon competition in Washington, D.C. The team tied for third in Market Viability, fourth in Communications, fifth in Engineering and sixth in Net Metering contests. The houses remained open for public tours through the weekend. Two ISU architecture courses earn national recognition October 19, 2009
The US Green Building Council (USGBC) recently honored two Iowa State University architecture courses for advancing green building education. The Bridge Studio, developed and taught by Nadia Anderson, was one of five national winners of the 2009 Excellence in Green Building Education Recognition Award in the higher education category. SCI-TECH, taught by Jason Alread, Tom Leslie and Rob Whitehead, received an honorable mention in the same category. [More...] [Link...]

Sandoval honored for outstanding doctoral dissertation September 18, 2009
Gerardo Sandoval, assistant professor of community and regional planning at Iowa State University, will receive the 2009 Barclay Gibbs Jones Award for Best Dissertation in Planning from the American Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) in October. Architecture alum builds Key Card Hotel for Holiday Inn September 18, 2009
Bryan Berg, a 1997 Iowa State architecture graduate, recently constructed a 400-square-foot Key Card Hotel of 200,000 Holiday Inn key cards to help Intercontinental Hotel Group celebrate a new logo design and relaunch 1,200 Holiday Inn hotels. Berg holds a master's degree from Harvard and is the Guinness World Record Holder for the World's Largest House of Cards. Read more about the Key Card Hotel in Fast Company magazine online. [Link...]
Faber to receive award for early teaching achievement September 17, 2009
Carol Faber, assistant professor of art and design (integrated studio arts), will receive the Iowa State University Award for Early Achievement in Teaching at the university's annual fall convocation Monday, Sept. 21, in the Memorial Union Sun Room. The $1,500 award recognizes a tenured or tenure-track faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding teaching performance unusually early in his or her career. [More...] [Link...]
Community Visioning Program applications available September 17, 2009
The Iowa's Living Roadways Community Visioning Program is accepting applications for the 2010 program. Since 1996, 159 communities throughout the state have benefited from the program, which integrates technical landscape planning and design techniques with sustainable community action. The program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Transportation in partnership with Iowa State University Extension Landscape Architecture and Trees Forever. [Link...]

Prominent architect to receive Christian Petersen award August 19, 2009
Bryce Pearsall, managing principal of DLR Group, will receive the ISU College of Design's 2009 Christian Petersen Design Award at a ceremony Monday, Aug. 24. The Petersen award is given annually to alumni, staff and friends of the university for distinguished work that advances the design and art professions. Pearsall graduated from Iowa State with a bachelor of architecture degree in 1971. [Link...]
Curator David McFadden to speak at ISU Aug. 24 August 18, 2009
David Revere McFadden, chief curator and vice president for programs and collections at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, will speak at the ISU College of Design on Monday, Aug. 24. His lecture, "The Blur Zone: Art, Craft and Design Today," will be at 7:30 p.m. in Kocimski Auditorium, 101 Design. It is free and open to the public. Design students begin classes in King Pavilion Aug. 24 August 17, 2009
The King Pavilion, Iowa State's first new green structure, will be dedicated at 5:15 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, in the Lyle E. Lightfoot Forum of the College of Design. A reception and tours of the facility will follow at 6 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public. Students will begin classes in the new addition on Aug. 24. Tour ISU Solar Decathlon house on Aug. 29 August 14, 2009
After 18 months of hard work, Iowa State University's Solar Decathletes are ready to show off their achievement: the solar-powered Interlock House, which they designed and built for the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon in Washington, D.C., in October. Sioux City students to take part in Design West workshop June 09, 2009
Sioux City's Fourth Street Historic District will teem with budding artists, architects and designers June 11-13 during the Iowa State University College of Design Summer Workshop for area high school students. Public invited to weigh in on statewide housing policy May 29, 2009
Iowans are invited to help inform the state's housing policy at a series of meetings hosted by Iowa State University Extension and the Center for Town/Craft in June and July. Meetings will be held at different locations around the state, and input received on housing needs and priorities will be used in an ongoing process to develop a state housing policy. [More...]
ISU's first green roof installed on King Pavilion May 21, 2009
Work should wrap up by early June on the King Pavilion addition to the College of Design, and one of the last tasks was to install a green roof, consisting of about 20 varieties of plants atop four layers and about four inches of special materials. Conservation Design Forum, a Chicago-based landscape architecture firm, designed the roof for the Iowa climate. [Link...]

Students create culturally responsive designs for Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College May 07, 2009
As the College of Design marked its 30th anniversary at Iowa State University this year, a multidisciplinary group of design students had the unique opportunity to help a newly formed college plan for the next 30 years. A studio class led by Lynn Paxson, associate professor of architecture, worked with leaders of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribal College (CATC) in Oklahoma to imagine what its campus could be in the future. Interior design students triumph in national competition May 05, 2009
Designs by three senior interior design students triumphed in the fifth annual Hospitality Design Awards competition sponsored by Hospitality Design magazine. Michael Goodsmith won first place in the student category with his conceptual designs for a sustainable nightclub. A concept for an upscale hotel and spa by Anna Anderson and Jennifer Irey was a finalist. They developed their projects in the interior design senior studio taught by assistant professor Jihyun Song. King Pavilion leads the way in ISU sustainability efforts April 20, 2009
The College of Design's King Pavilion is the university's first newly constructed "green" structure. It will meet high green building and performance measurements, including lower operating costs, increased asset value, reduced waste sent to landfills, decreased water and energy use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Architecture students in Rome feel earthquake, aftershocks April 08, 2009

Work by Ingrid Lilligren, professor of art and design, is in an exhibition through April 8 at Bunny Gunner Gallery in Pomona, Calif. The show features 120 7"x7" squares from Lilligren's "Small Pleasures" project, which she created from dry pastels and eggshells over the course of one year. Four finalists named in ISU design dean search February 12, 2009
Four finalists in the search for the next dean of the College of Design will visit campus during the next three weeks. Nordmeyer to direct Iowa Energy Center February 02, 2009
Kevin Nordmeyer, an architect who is currently a partner at RDG Planning and Design in Des Moines, will be the new director of the Iowa Energy Center. Nordmeyer begins his new job March 1. He designed two Iowa State University projects -- the Morrill Hall restoration and the new King Pavilion at the College of Design -- to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture from Iowa State and has taught sustainable design for the ISU department of architecture. [Link...]

Iowa State University community planning students in Gerardo Sandoval's class spent the semester working with the people of Perry to enhance the city's downtown revitalization plan.
