There are many scholarships available to students pursuing degrees in the College of Design. The College and each department offers scholarships to students based on academic excellence and demonstrated financial need. Students applying for scholarships based on financial need must have a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) on file.

To find out more information about each of these scholarships and how to apply, click on the scholarship title. Scholarships and awards are contingent upon the availability of funding.

AIA Iowa/AIA National Scholarship

Architecture  
The Iowa Chapter AIA and the National AIA have joined together to provide financial assistance to architecture students.
 
$1,500 minimum tuition credit.  Amount and number of awards vary based upon available funds.
 
Open to students accepted to or enrolled in the undergraduate professional program.  The recipient is to be in good academic standing and a U.S. citizen.  Preference is given to applicants belonging to an under-represented U.S. ethnic group and to applicants who are residents of Iowa.

The National American Institute of Architects and the Iowa American Institute of Architects have joined to provide financial assistance to architecture students.

Open to 4th year or graduate level architecture students participating in the Spring 2010 Rome Study Abroad program.
 
First preference shall be based on overall academic performance; 2nd preference based on demonstrated professional promise; and 3rd preference based on displayed leadership and participation in school and community activities.

American Tapestry Alliance Award

Art and Design American Tapestry Alliance 2nd Annual Student Award http://www.americantapestryalliance.org

The American Tapestry Alliance Student Award will be presented annually to a student enrolled in a college fiber program. The award will consist of $250 and a year's student membership in the American Tapestry Alliance. The winner's work will be featured in the ATA quarterly newsletter, Tapestry Topics.

Archer Daniels Midland Company Scholarship

College of Design
ADM and FFA partner to offer up to $160,000 in scholarships that support FFA members enrolling in a two or four year college or university.
 
Non-renewable scholarships are awarded in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded to each applicant who is a current or former FFA member, full-time student attending two or four year college or university.
 
Recipients are selected based on academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.

Arthur R. & Clare M. Merkle Endowment for Excellence in Landscape Architecture

Landscape Architecture
$1000 scholarship awarded to a worthy Landscape Architecture student without regard to class standing and who has a curricular focus in urban design.  Renewable at the discretion of the department chair.  Faculty selects from list of students.
ASI Modulex Design Scholarship

The ASI Modulex Design Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Architecture, Interior Design or Graphic Design.  Selection is based on financial need (determined by FASFA) with preference given to applicants doing work in architectural signage and way-finding systems.

Career Days Scholarships

One or two scholarships from $500-$1000 (Based on funds available.)
 
Scholarships are available to College of Design undergraduate students who are currently in the third year of their academic program. The recipient must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.  Preference may be given to qualified applicants who were actively involved in planning the current year's Career Days event.

Up to $5,000 for travel and study available to students and recent graduates in the fields of architecture, architectural history, and urban studies who are pursuing independent projects. Grants cannot be used for tuition, and will not be awarded to support participation in an organized program, such as a university study abroad program.

Deeia M. Topp & John W. Sparling Rome Scholarship

Interior Design
This scholarship is open to undergraduate students in the Interior Design program who will be participating in the Rome Study Abroad program.  The Interior Design Program within the Department of Art and Design shall be responsible for the selection of the recipient and for the distribution of funds.
 
Selection Criteria:
  1. Majoring in the Interior Design program.
  2. Participating in the Rome Study Abroad Program.
Selection Procedure:
  1. Completed College of Design Scholarship Form (click on link to the left) must be submitted by the last Thursday of February to the Department of Art and Design office, Room 158.
  2. The selection committee will consist of the interior design studio faculty.
  3. The committee will review applications and select the recipient based on the information submitted by the applicant.
  4. Announcement of recipient will be made by April 15th.  The actual monetary award will be presented the following fall semester in application toward the student’s tuition.

DESIGN DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP
For First-Year Undergraduate Students, 2009/10 Academic Year
 
Program Description
The College of Design Diversity Scholarship for First-Year Undergraduate Students seeks to increase the diversity of the design, art and planning professions from historically and currently underrepresented backgrounds in these fields.  Incoming first-year undergraduate students who identify as Black, Native American, and Hispanic are especially encouraged to apply.
 
ISU defines diversity as that quality of its physical, social, cultural and intellectual environment which embraces the rich differences within the multiplicity of human expression and characteristics including: Age, Culture, Ethnicity, Gender Identification and Presentation, Language and Linguistic Ability, Physical Ability and Quality, Race, Religion, Sexual Orientation, and Socioeconomic Status.

Scholarship Information
The Design Diversity Scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate student entering the College of Design and is a non-renewable award of $2,500.  (The award will be split evenly, $1,250 fall semester 2010 and $1,250 spring semester 2011.  The recipient must be a College of Design student in good academic standing to receive the spring award.).  Students applying online for this scholarship must have accepted their offer of admission to Iowa State University.  You may accept your offer online at  http://www.admissions.iastate.edu/apply 
 
Additional information follows:
  • Candidates have a minimum High School GPA of 2.5/4.0;
  • Demonstrated financial need, (a FAFSA must be on file with the Student Financial Aid Office);

  • Carver Scholars are exempt from applying for this scholarship.

EDSA Minority Scholarship

Landscape Architecture The EDSA Minority Scholarship was established to help African American, Hispanic, Native American and minority students of other cultural and ethnic backgrounds continue their landscape architecture education as they enter into their final two years of undergraduate study.   It is endowed through the Landscape Architecture Foundation.  The amount is $5,000 and the application deadline is February 15th.  Please use the below link to the Minority Scholarship page with the Landscape Architecture Foundation to learn more details about this scholarship.

The Iowa State University Women's Club annually recognizes the academic, personal and community accomplishments of Iowa State University upper class and graduate status women students through awards funded by the club and two former members.  The number of awards and the amount of each award varies from year to year depending upon available funds.  These awards are intended as an honor for personal achievement rather than financial need.  A student is eligible for only one award.

National Association of Women in Construction Scholarship

The National Association of Women in Construction offers two scholarships one national and one from the Quad City Chapter.

National Scholarship
The applicant must be a full-time student in a construction-related program (i.e. engineering, drafting, architecture, etc) and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. The scholarship is available to both male and female students

Quad City Chapter Scholarship
The applicant must be a full-time student in a construction-industry related program (i.e. engineering, drafting, architecture, etc) and have a minimum 3.0 GPA. The applicant must also show a need for financial aid. The scholarship is available to both male and female students.

This is a travel scholarship of at least $500, awarded to an undergraduate student in the College of Design planning to participate in the Rome program or other international study opportunity offered by the College of Design.

Application Requirements:

Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 and have demonstrated financial need determined by the FAFSA on file with the Student Financial Aid Office.

  2. A FAFSA must be on file with the Student Financial Aid Office. 
  3. On the online application form attach a 200-250 word essay on how the study abroad program relates to your educational goals. The scholarship committee makes its selection primarily on the basis of essay quality.
  4. On the right hand corner of the essay, please include your name, the international study program you plan to participate in, and what semester you plan to attend.  

    Deadline:Complete the online application by February 1, for students planning on international study during the Summer or Fall term and by October 15, for students planning international study during the Spring term.

Robert Catlin / David W. Long Memorial Scholarship

Named after committed planners and long-standing PBCD members, The Robert A. Catlin/David W. Long Memorial Scholarship serves to foster increased interest among African American undergraduates in urban planning as a graduate field of study and as a professional career. The $2,500 scholarship is given directly to the student to pay for expenses incurred during the academic year.
Eligibility Criteria:
The scholarship is available to:
  • Black undergraduate students currently applying to, or who have been accepted into, an urban planning program for graduate studies;
  • Black graduate students, majoring in urban planning or a related field (geography, environmental studies, urban studies, urban policy etc.)
All application materials must be received via e-mail by Friday, February 13, 2009, 5:00pm EST.
A review committee comprised of members of the division shall review applications and select a recipient. The anticipated notification date is February 27, 2009. The winner will also be honored at the Planning and the Black Community scholarship event that takes place during the National APA Conference.

Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund

National apparel retailer Talbots, Inc. ( http://www.talbots.com/ ) has launched its 2007 Women's Scholarship Program, a fund that annually awards $100,000 in college scholarships to outstanding women seeking a bachelor's or associate's degree later in life.

Sponsored by the Talbots Charitable Foundation, the Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund annually awards five $10,000 scholarships and 50 $1,000 scholarships to women throughout the U.S. Since its inception in 1997, the fund has awarded college scholarships to 440 women, ranging in age from their late 20s to their early 60s.

Wendy Marie Noteboom Ewell Scholarship

Art and Design

The Wendy Marie Noteboom Ewell Scholarship has been established at Iowa  State  Universityfor the benefit of qualifying art students.  Wendy, age 30, died on July 8, 2005.  She graduated from Iowa  Statein 1998 with a degree in bio-medical illustration, studied at the Art Students League in New York City, and went on to establish a career as a successful painter.  She exhibited her paintings widely throughout New York, Tucson, and Michigan, receiving numerous awards and honors including a Special Opportunity Stipend from the New York Foundation for the Arts.  Her exquisite paintings can be enjoyed on her website at www.wendyewell.com.

 

Criteria:  A $1,000 awarded to a junior or senior enrolled in art courses through the department of Art and Design with preferences give to female students studying in the fine arts.  Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0.  Selection will be made by the scholarship and awards committee in the Department of Art and Design.  Applications available in Art & Design Office, 158 Design.

YWCA Scholarship

  The YWCA is an organization committed to the empowerment of women and girls and to the elimination of racism.  The YWCA is awarding a $750 scholarship each to a female undergraduate student and a graduate student who have done their part to help eliminate racism and empower women. Established by James and Suanne Stange to recognize a student who has demonstrated interest in multi-disciplinary work.
 
$1,000 tuition credit.
 
Open to architecture students entering the fourth year of the professional program.
 
Selection is based upon financial need, a portfolio review, and demonstrated multi-disciplinary interest either through joint project cooperation with students in other design curricula or elective studies which broaden the student's perspective of the built environment.  Special consideration is given for interdisciplinary interests in mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering; and interior, landscape, community planning, building, and fine arts design.

Family, friends, and alumni of Iowa State established this scholarship in 1993 in memory of Jeffrey J. Pilling.  The award is to provide financial assistance for students participating in the department's foreign study program.
 
$500 - $1,000 tuition credit.  Amount and number of awards vary based on available funds.
 
Open to both undergraduate architecture students entering the fourth or fifth year of study and graduate level architecture students.  This award is contingent upon participation in the department's foreign study program.  Participation must be during the same academic year that the scholarship is awarded.  Selection is based upon financial need and/or academic achievement and/or professional promise.

Rome and International Study Scholarship

This is a travel scholarship of $500 minimum, awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in the College of Design planning to participate in the Rome program and/or other international study programs in the College of Design. Students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5.
 
Application Requirements:

2. On the online application form submit a 200-250 word essay. The essay should include your reasons for studying abroad as well as a description of what you hope to gain and accomplish abroad. Landscape Architecture A $500 scholarship will be awarded each fall to a student entering the third or fourth year in the Landscape Architecture program.  An application will be made available by the Iowa Chapter each year.
Marvin R. Springer Scholarship

Landscape Architecture, Planning
$1,000 scholarship awarded to a student entering the Department of Community and Regional Planning or the Department of Landscape Architecture program.  The award is renewable each year in the program, up to a total award of $4000, if a minimum 2.75 GPA is maintained and the student stays in the program.  Demonstrated financial need. The student must submit a College of Design application, a 300 word written statement, and three letters of recommendation.  Note: Springer scholars are not eligible for the Dyas Scholarship.
Murray B. Weir Scholarship

Landscape Architecture $1,000 scholarship awarded to a Landscape Architecture student who has demonstrated financial need, high academic achievement and shows professional potential.  Not renewable.  Faculty selects from list of eligible students.

$1000 scholarship awarded to a Landscape Architecture student who shows leadership ability.  Participation in SSLA and minimum 3.0 LA GPA required.  Demonstrated financial need.  Renewable at the discretion of the department chair.  Faculty selects from list of eligible students.
Robert Dyas Scholarship

Landscape Architecture
$500 scholarship awarded to a top applicant to the professional program with evidence of high academic accomplishments and potential for leadership in Landscape Architecture.  Renewable upon maintenance of normal progress in the program and a minimum 2.75 GPA and 3.0 LA GPA.  Faculty selects from list of eligible students.
Pappa John Entrepreneur Scholarship

Other SPRING PAPPAJOHN ENTREPRENEUR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM The John and Mary Pappajohn Scholarship Fund has ten $1,000 scholarships to be awarded to ISU Junior, Senior, and Graduate students who demonstrate an interest in entrepreneurship.
