The college has several rapid prototyping machines available to students. Most of them are located in the college's output center (room 426). We have the following equipment:
Laser Cutters
We currently have two laser cutters in Design 426, One from Universal (a 60 Watt) and one from Trotech (a 45 watt). These laser cutters can cut materials up to 1/4" thick plus do engraving on a variety of materials. To keep things as simple and streamlined as possible, materials for the cutter are purchased directly from the output center. We offer the following materials:
- Plexiglas in black, white and clear in 1/16" and 1/8" thicknesses
- 6" x 28" basswood in 1/16" and 1/8" thicknesses
- Cardboard
- Chipboard
Other materials can be brought in at the discretion of the lab manager
Dimension BST 3D Printer
The 3D Printer uses a two-part plastic to create models in an 8" x 8" x 8" envelope. Models are converted to a STL file format then output one layer at a time using the two materials to create the model and support areas. Costs for this device are $5.75/cubic inch of material.
Vacuum Forming
We also have a Formech 450 vacuum former located in room 426. This device uses a vaccum to mold a 18"x18" sheet of heated pastic to a form. It can be used to create forms for creating multiple copies or as part of packaging applications. Materials for the vacuum can be purchased from the output center for $2.25
CNC Routing
The college currently has a AXYZ 4008 router located in the Design Model Shop (room 030 Design). The router has a 4'x8' cutting bed and 7.5 inches of vertical travel. Becuase of the complexity of this machine, additional training is required for students and faculty.
