Two Iowa State University College of Design students have received SDA Outstanding Student Awards from the Surface Design Association. The award is presented annually for innovative work in textile media by student makers.

Interdisciplinary design senior Mitzi Alexander, Nevada, and integrated visual arts graduate student Tina Rice, Ames, were selected from among 45 nominations nationwide. Nominees had to present a cohesive and professionally accomplished body of work that would make a strong one-person show; demonstrate inventive and innovative use of technique, materials or concepts; have a record of participation in all areas of the fiber and surface design curriculum with particular accomplishment in one area; and have a record of sharing knowledge generously with fellow students and working toward common group goals in the program.

Alexander and Rice each will receive a certificate and a complimentary one-year digital SDA membership, access to SDA regional groups and SDA-sponsored conferences and events, and exhibition and professional development opportunities, among other benefits.
