SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Iowa State University Design West Studio will expand its summer programming this year to include design workshops for both middle and high school students at its facility in Sioux City.

The first-ever Explore Design! Summer Design Workshop—for students currently in sixth, seventh or eighth grade—will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 14. With support from a National Endowment for the Arts Access to Artistic Excellence Grant, ISU Design West will provide 25 scholarships for area students to attend the one-day workshop free of charge. Application forms have been distributed to area middle schools; interested students must work with a teacher or counselor to fill out an application and submit it for review by April 1. Students will receive notification of selection by the end of April.

The fourth annual high school workshop, Sioux City by Design 2011, will be held June 15-17. It is open to students currently in ninth through 12th grade. The NEA grant will support 10 scholarships for this workshop. The $100 registration fee for all other participants covers lunch and breaks each day, transportation for local tours, and all required supplies and materials. A brochure and registration form are available online at www.design.iastate.edu/ISUDesignWest/summerworkshop.php.

Led by two faculty members from the ISU College of Design, both workshops will involve hands-on explorations in two- and three-dimensional media. Students will also interact with area artists and designers to learn more about careers in various art and design fields. At the end of each workshop, students will exhibit their completed work at a public reception at ISU Design West, 1014½ Design Place.

"These workshops are a fantastic way for students with a strong interest in art and design to explore that interest and discover educational and career paths. Each year, we see so much talent from area students, and working with faculty from Iowa State's College of Design helps them to hone their skills," said Susan Fey, program coordinator at ISU Design West. "We are excited to offer scholarships to help more students take advantage of these opportunities."
