Iowa State’s College of Design is one of the most comprehensive design institutions in the nation where you can find a mix of disciplines housed in the same college, under the same roof. So even if you’re undecided right now, you can find something that fits your interests here. That’s where the Undeclared Design Program comes in – it’s perfect for students who, just like you, need some time to explore design before committing to a program.

Your first year, undeclared

Entering the College of Design undeclared does not need to affect your graduation date. How does that work? The Core Design Program.

Most students entering the College of Design are required to enroll in the first-year Core Design Program, which provides a common set of foundational classes that exposes students to all nine majors within the College of Design, preparing you for any of our degree programs. At the end of your first year, you can apply to any or all of the college’s professional degree programs.

You can also get engaged with student organizations, participate in academic advising, and attend a variety of events held by each department throughout your journey toward choosing a major. Every student experience is designed to help you find, explore, and grow within the areas of design that most inspire you!
