30th Anniversary

Design Document Center
In January 2004, the College of Design took over the operation of the document center from the university. This venture has allowed us to reduce the costs to students and add longer hours for the output center. We have added some additional equipment to the center through grants and we now have a well-rounded service. All jobs are submitted through the college network.
Canon 3200 Color Printer
The Canon color printer handles prints up to 12" x 18" on a variety of papers. Costs are $1.00/page with $.25/page for additional copies of the same page.

Epson 9800
The Epson is a 36"-wide 8-color ink jet printer. We print on a photo luster paper. Costs for this printer are $.60/inch (36" wide).

Epson 4000
This is a photo quality printer that can print 8.5x11, 13x19 and 17x22 prints.  The maximum resolution for our center is 1400x720 dpi.  If you need to go higher than this, a special order must be made and the costs are significantly higher.  We have two different kinds of paper, a satin and a gloss.  Costs: 8.5x11: $2.00, 13x19: $4.00 and 17x22: $6.00

Kip 2100
This device is a 36"-wide engineering copier/printer. We can do enlargements and reductions or print directly from the network. The cost for this device is $2.00/foot.

Laser Cutters
We currently have two laser cutters in Design 426, One from Universal (a 60 Watt) and one from Trotec (a 45 watt).  These laser cutters can cut materials up to 1/4" thick plus do engraving on a variety of materials. To keep things as simple and streamlined as possible, materials for the cutter are purchased directly from the output center. We offer the following materials:
  • Plexiglas in black, white and clear in 1/16" and 1/8" thicknesses
  • 6" x 28" basswood in 1/16" and 1/8" thicknesses
  • Cardboard
  • Chipboard
  • Other materials can be brought in at the discretion of the lab manager.

    Dimension BST 3D Printer
The 3D Printer uses a two-part plastic to create models in an 8" x 8" x 8" envelope. Models are converted to a STL file format then output one layer at a time using the two materials to create the model and support areas. Costs for this device are $5.75/cubic inch of material.

    Wide-format Scanner
We also have a 40"-wide CONTEX scanner for student use. Scans can be up to 1/2" thick. Scans are saved to a lab machine with a CD burner and network access for storage.

    Equipment Checkout
The output center also serves as a place for students to check out a wide variety of equipment. Equipment can be checked out for 24 hours (or longer with approval).
