Essay Question
Choose one of the following essay questions:

1. Make a list of 29 things you can do with a pack of chewing gum. Each item on the list should be described in as few words as possible. Write an essay about three items on your list. The list should be included in your essay submission, but is not included in the word count.

OR

2. Write a new version of your tool essay (for the 102 Pattern Project). This version should address the origins of the tool as well as meet the criteria of the original assignment. The extent of the rewriting is up to you.

Essay Criteria

General: The essay should be a thoughtful, clearly written argument in response to the essay question. Reviewers will evaluate the essay based on a number of factors, which may include ability to write standard English (mechanics), clarity of argument, appropriateness and specificity of examples used to support your argument, and quality of language (word choice, sentence structure, etc.).

Format: The essay should be typed, 1.5 line spacing, 11‐point Times New Roman, with 1" margins throughout (left, right, top and bottom). The essay should be no shorter than 750 words minimum and must not exceed two pages in length. Note: The list in Essay 1 is outside these rules. It must be printed in 8.5"x11" (letter size) format. References, notes, and bibliography/works cited may be on a third page (stapled).

Citations: If you are citing specific sources, your essay must include a bibliography citing all sources. Appropriate references for citing sources include MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition (Modern Language Association of America, 2009) or MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing, 3rd edition (Modern Language Association of America, 2008).

Identification: Please put your 9‐digit ISU student ID number at the top of your essay (each sheet).

Hard copies: You are required to submit as many hard copies as the number of programs you are applying to. For example, if you are applying to three different programs, you should bring three copies of your essay to Room 462, College of Design, along with your portfolio. The hard copies must be submitted together with your portfolio and must comply with the specifications described above. The essay must be printed on plain 8.5"x11" paper and stapled in the top left corner.

Digital version: You are also required to upload your essay on the application form Web site (see Application Information) BEFORE you may submit your portfolio. The file must be named only with your 9‐digit ISU number (for example "123456789.doc"): no spaces or dashes.

Plagiarism: Please refer to the "Policies and Practices" chapter of the ISU Student Information Handbook, Section XIII: Academic Dishonesty, (PDF, pp. 18-20) for a description of what constitutes plagiarism. Any violation will disqualify you from the admission review and may result in university action.

GOOD LUCK!
