How to Prepare for Career Day
Career Days include activities of value and interest to all College of Design students. With advanced preparation and research students can maximize the benefits of Career Days.
  • Review the schedule of events to determine specific programming of interest to you.
  • Find out what firms representing your major will be attending and visit their websites.
  • Attending firm profiles is highly recommended to get an overview of the firm’s work. Representatives will present highlights of the firm, some of their current projects and their emphasis.
  • When approaching firm displays, introduce yourself and tell the firm representative your major. Be prepared to ask questions such as: What is your firm’s specialty? What type of projects does your firm do? Describe a typical work day? What qualifications does your firm seek when hiring employees? What types of things should I be doing now to prepare myself for a career? What types of work would someone with my major do in your firm?

First and second year students:

  • The main thing is to attend this event and get a feel for what it involves.
  • You may want to discuss careers in general, career paths or skills, talents and qualifications that firms expect from their employees.
  • You may want to learn about diverse firms and about their projects.
  • You may be interested in building a relationship with specific firms for future internships or jobs.

Students seeking internships or full-time jobs:

  • Attending firm presentations is an excellent way to learn about a firm. Following the presentation, you may want to visit the firm’s booth to ask questions.
  • Design students should be well prepared to interact with firm representatives in a professional manner at Career Day. Dress appropriately for the event, especially if in job search mode.
  • Provide introductions, inquire first about the firm and then about availability of employment opportunities that will utilize your skills and talents.
  • Take resumes with you and ask if the representative will forward your resume and design samples to the person who supervises hiring in your area of interest.
  • Do your homework; know what firms will attend and in what cities their offices are located. Some firms may be representing one office; however, other firms have offices in various cities across the USA and may be willing to circulate your resume to appropriate staff in those offices.
  • Be sure to collect business cards for further correspondence.
  • Some firms are conducting interviews on Friday. These firms will have schedules at their booths for you to sign up for interviews. Inquire about interviews and be sure to give the firm a resume that includes samples of your work.
  • Perhaps you could inquire about visiting the firm during Spring Break or at another time to show your portfolio and discuss employment opportunities with their firm.
  • Career Day is also a great time to begin networking and demonstrate your interest in a firm by asking professionals the questions you really want answered.

Following Career Days:
Sending firm representatives that you meet at Career Day a note thanking them for taking their time to attend the event will certainly make a favorable second impression.

  Getting Involved
There are many ways for students to get involved in assisting with Career Day. Your help is greatly needed and appreciated. If you would like to volunteer to assist in making this event a huge success, contact mhutches@iastate.edu.
