The College of Design and Bioeconomy Institute at Iowa State University helped mark Earth Day on April 22 by announcing winners in the second annual Biorenewables Inspired Juried Student Art Competition. Flora, Fuels, Future, a collaborative mixed-media piece by Naomi Friend, Sioux Center, and Heather Whittlesey, Newton, took Best in Show ($750). Other award winners included Reincarnation (recycled/found object sculpture), Troy Chebuhar, Burr Ridge, Ill., first place ($250); Plate #2 (hard maple), Peter Kasper, Tiffin, second place ($125); and Seeded Idea (ceramic, silver leaf), Derek Zarn, Davenport, third place ($75).
The art will be exhibited in the atrium and administrative suite of the Biorenewables Research Laboratory (BRL) until April 2012, when the next juried show will be installed. The Best in Show piece, shown above, will be displayed permanently.
