ISCORE Call for Proposals
The 11th annual Iowa State Conference on Race and Ethnicity (ISCORE) will be held March 5, 2010, at the Memorial Union. Concurrent workshops are sought that are designed to create inclusive environments, improve racial and ethnic relations, and expand opportunities for access and success by culturally diverse, traditionally underrepresented populations; to provide important insights, viewpoints, skills, tools and/or strategies, stressing solutions, implementation and practical applications; and to highlight outstanding programs, approaches and models.
Proposals are especially sought for 50-minute sessions in one or more of the following categories: case studies/model programs; curriculum and pedagogy; interactive diversity training; long- and short-range planning; panel or small-group discussion; policy issues; and research/assessment/evaluations.

Criteria for Participation in Commencement
Because the university will no longer hold a summer commencement ceremony, criteria have been developed for participation in spring commencement by students who are expected to meet graduation requirements during the summer. Students planning to complete degree requirements during summer term and approved to participate in the spring commencement ceremony will have their names listed in the program with a symbol indicating "projected summer graduate." The fall commencement program will include an official list of all summer graduates.
Undergraduate advisers and major professors are asked to inform students of these new criteria, especially those students likely to be eligible to participate in the spring 2010 commencement.
ISU ADVANCE Lecture Co-sponsorship Program Grants
ISU ADVANCE offers 10 lecture co-sponsorship ($300) awards open to all disciplines each year. Departments and programs can apply throughout this academic year until the funds are exhausted.
Gensler Portfolio Workshop
Gensler will host its third annual portfolio workshop -- "Power Portfolios: What sets you apart?" -- at 1:30 p.m.
next Friday, Nov. 13, at its office in downtown Chicago. This session is designed to provide undergraduate students in their last two years of college, graduate students, and faculty the opportunity to learn how a design portfolio can go beyond a paper or digital chronology of drawings and images to a portfolio that truly separates one designer from another.
Following a presentation by a Gensler senior design professional, students are encouraged to bring completed or in-progress portfolios to engage in one-on-one reviews and receive feedback and practical advice to help set their portfolio apart from all others. Space is limited, and registration is required by
next Monday, Nov. 9. For more information and to register, go to

Young Women's Resource Center Annual Fundraiser
The Young Women's Resource Center in Des Moines seeks a group of Iowa State students to participate in its annual Sit On It! fundraising event -- a live auction featuring furniture created, decorated and donated by local artists, and a silent auction focused on jewelry, woodworking and wall art, as well as other work that does not go in the live auction. All proceeds from the April 17, 2010 event will benefit the resource center's programs to support, educate and advocate for young women as they experience life's challenges.
The center would like to work with student artists and designers from all disciplines who haven't been involved with this event before. Faculty who may be interested in incorporating this kind of service work into a class are encouraged to contact Christina Heth, volunteer services/special events coordinator for the Young Women's Resource Center, (515) 244-4901,
cheth@ywrc.org. Please also consider sharing this information with your students, who may wish to follow up on their own.
