Dale McKinney (BA 1975 Architecture), AIA, was installed on the board of directors for the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) at its 90th Annual Meeting and Conference in Chicago in June. As the director of Region 4 (Mid-Central Conference), McKinney represents Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. McKinney also serves as the president of the Iowa Architecture Examiners Board. He is the founding partner of M+ Architects in Sioux City.

Roxane (Olson) Hollosi (BFA 1985 Art and Design - Drawing/Painting/Printmaking) received an Honorable Mention for her mixed-media artwork titled "Gathered Flowers - Many Windows" in the Paulding Fine Arts Association's 19th Annual Fine Arts Exhibition in Dallas, Ga., in October. She also had work accepted into and featured on the front of the formal invitation for the 22nd National Juried Art Exhibition at the South Cobb Arts Alliance in Mableton, Ga., which ran August-September. Hollosi's work may be seen at www.roxanehollosi.com. She is seen here at work on a new mixed-media piece in her studio.

zzGassman, an interdisciplinary design collaborative founded by Bob (MArch 2009 Architecture) and Shannon (Jones) Gassman (BFA 2008 Interior Design) in 2008, won the Iowa Architect Directory Magazine Cover and Layout Design Competition in early 2009. Their work is featured in the recently published 2009 Iowa Architect Directory Magazine.

Leigh Streit (BArch 2006 Architecture), Chitani Ndisale (BArch 2005 Architecture), and three colleagues from Flad Architects, Madison, Wis., won the Wisconsin regional US Green Building Council's Natural Talent Design Competition for an urban renewal site in Milwaukee. Their first-place entry will compete at the Greenbuild International Conference & Expo in Boston in November.

Martin (BLA 1983 Landscape Architecture), president of Martin Design Partnership, Batavia, Ill., will make a presentation at the American Society of Landscape Architects Annual Meeting in Chicago at the end of September. Martin, a registered landscape architect and member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, will discuss design solutions for sustainable golf course development with Todd Schoeder of Design Workshop and Nancy Richardson of Audubon International.

After nine years in western New York, Jan Conradi (MA 1988 Art & Design - Graphic Design) has left SUNY Fredonia to accept a position as design educator at Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J. She will be working with colleagues there to strengthen the graphic design program, particularly in typography and design history.

Mark Tough (BS 1991 Community & Regional Planning) has joined the Neighborhoods of Greater Lauraville Inc. community development corporation in northeast Baltimore as its executive director. In his previous position as acting executive director of Baltimore's Patterson Park CDC, Tough was integral to the development of 19 LEED-Silver Certified rowhome rehabs and other development projects. Lauraville has just been named the Best Place to Buy an Old House in Maryland by This Old House magazine and website.

Frank Lloyd Wright told us that architecture was an old man's profession in that you got better through the years and that you could still do it in your old age. Well it's true. I am still practicing architecture in the Chicago suburbs and having a great time doing it. No great awards, but good architecture.

After 39 years working for the Department of the Navy at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Raymond Schreiber (BS 1969 Landscape Architecture) retired as the SUBSAFE records branch manager in January 2009. He has since created Eagle Roost Productions, building unique, handcrafted cedar birdhouses and birdfeeders. Samples of his work can be seen by visiting the "Project Return Home" birdhouse auction website.

Katie Raymon (BA 2007 Art and Design) joined the Iowa State University College of Business as a graphic designer in July. Among her responsibilities, Raymon will help design the college's alumni magazine, Prospectus, as well as brochures and posters; develop identities for several of the college's leadership programs; and work on materials for the college's 25th anniversary.

Jade Liska (BLA 1994 Landscape Architecture), RLA, ASLA, was promoted to manager of the Citywide Planning Division in the Kansas City, Mo., City Planning and Development Department in 2008. He manages the daily activities of long-range planning, GIS and graphics, city data, census and information support, transportation and preservation planning. Liska served as co-project manager for the city's first comprehensive citywide trails plan, Trails KC, which was adopted in November 2008. The plan received an Honor Award at the American Society of Landscape Architects Central States Conference in Omaha in May. The local Prairie Gateway Chapter of the ASLA also awarded the Trails KC Plan with a Merit Award for outstanding planning in April.

Jonathan T. Miller (BS 1968 Architecture) has received a patent for CitySkyGardens, a multifamily concept he developed that incorporates sound neighborhood principles and green design characteristics in medium- to very high-density housing. The concept currently is being adapted to senior housing.

Paul Hughey (BS 1998 Community & Regional Planning) recently joined Parsons as the senior planner for its Honolulu, Hawaii office, where he works on military planning projects throughout the Pacific, including Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Japan and South Korea. In 2006, while working for the Air Force at Ramstein AB in Germany, Hughey was selected by the Civil Engineer of the Air Force as the Community Planner of the Year for the Air Force.

Neumann Monson Architects, Iowa City, recently received three International Interior Design Association awards at the Great Plains Chapter annual expo in Des Moines. Dave Zahradnik (BAR 1994 Architecture), Tim Schroeder (BAR 1994 Architecture) and Jesse Bulman (BAR 2004 Architecture) were members of the team that earned a Gold Award for sustainability for the Neumann Monson offices in downtown Iowa City. Schroeder and Bulman were on the team that earned a Gold Award for hospitality and retail for Formosa Asian Cuisine, also in downtown Iowa City. Zahradnik, Bulman, and Kristin (Manderscheid) Mohr (BAR 2004 Architecture) were on the team that earned a Silver Award for government work for the Coralville Public Library in Coralville.

Dean Apostol (BS 1977 Landscape Architecture), is a senior landscape architect with MIG Portland and an adjunct instructor at the University of Oregon, Eugene, and Portland State University. He recently co-authored two books: Restoring the Pacific Northwest: The Art and Science of Ecological Restoration in Cascadia (Island Press, 2006), with Marcia Sinclair and Eric Higgs, and Designing Sustainable Forest Landscapes (Taylor & Francis Press, 2008) with Simon Bell. A Kindle edition of the latter book became available in January 2009.

Engelbrecht (BAR 1963 Architecture), FAIA, professor of architecture and dean of the Iowa State University College of Design, will receive the Order of the Knoll Faculty-Staff Award from the university at the 2009 Distinguished Awards Ceremony on April 17. The award is presented to an ISU employee who has brought distinction to the university through his/her professional and personal activities and achievements.

A project designed by Mike Neswick (BA 1982 Architecture), a partner in RML Architects LLC, Sioux City, and installed by Keith Heiser of Todd Rose Decorative Concrete, won first place in the Stencil Division (Greater than 1,500 Square Feet Category) of the 2008 American Society of Concrete Contractors' Decorative Concrete Council Awards. The project appeared on the cover of the February 2009 issue of Concrete Decor Magazine.

CPT Marcus Smoot (BLA 1993 Landscape Architecture) was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service while deployed to Iraq with the 1/133 Infantry Battalion. The unit was deployed nearly 22 months and located in the Anbar Province for the entire mission.

Since joining HBA in 2004, he has been involved in a variety of projects, including renovations to the award-winning Oceanfront Dentistry practice in Virginia Beach, Va., and the Children's Museum of Virginia, the new Churchland Library and the YMCA, all in Portsmouth, Va.

Dana Wilkinson (BA 1978 Interior Design), IIDA, of Bettendorf, is one of five recipients of the 2009 Athena Business Women's Awards, which will be presented by Missman Stanley & Associates on March 24 at a luncheon in Moline. She is the founder and CEO of Paragon Commercial Interiors, which was named one of the "Best Places to Work" by Quad City Magazine and was honored for its "Excellence in Commerce" by the Illinois Quad City Chamber of Commerce.

Kevin Nordmeyer (BA 1987 / MAR 1990 Architecture), an architect who is currently a partner at RDG Planning and Design in Des Moines, will be the new director of the Iowa Energy Center. He begins his new job March 1. Nordmeyer designed the Iowa State University College of Design's King Pavilion to meet LEED standards and has taught sustainable design for the ISU architecture department.

Michael Donovan (BS 1967 Applied Art) and Graham Hanson (BFA 1989 Graphic Design) served on the panel of judges for EXHIBITOR Magazine's 23rd Annual Exhibit Design Awards, honoring the world's best trade show exhibit designs. The competition draws domestic and international entrants from countries as diverse as Turkey, Switzerland, Israel, Australia and the Netherlands.

Bryce D. Pearsall (BAR 1971 Architecture), FAIA, LEED-AP, managing principal with DLR Group, has been selected chair of the American Institute of Architects Large Firm Roundtable. An active member of AIA LFRT since 1997, Pearsall has served as vice chair and executive committee member since 2002. Comprising chief executives from more than 60 large architectural and engineering firms, the mission of the AIA LFRT is to further the special and unique interests, both national and international, of large firms by working with and through the AIA.

Robyn Vettraino (BAR 2000 Architecture), LEED AP, senior associate with Studio SA, was the architect and sustainability consultant for Vista Dunes Courtyard Homes, an 80-unit affordable housing project in La Quinta, Calif., that received a LEED-H Platinum rating. This was the largest affordable housing project in the nation to receive such a rating.

Allers Associates Architects, PC, of Fort Dodge, will observe its 30th anniversary in 2009. Founded in 1979 by Terry L. Allers (BAR 1970 Architecture), AIA, NCARB, the firm has a staff of nine people providing general architectural services for medical, educational, commercial and worship facilities primarily in northwest and central Iowa.

Noel J. Raufaste (BAR 1967 Architecture) of Avondale, Pa., has served for seven years as a guest researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), where he has been involved in a wide range of recent activities, including: helping to plan the 41st Joint Meeting of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources (UNJR) Panel on Wind and Seismic Effects, scheduled for May 2009; creating a NIST program with the government of China in building and fire research; leading the development of a strategic planning process for NIST’s Building and Fire Research Laboratory; and serving as co-chair of the Grand Challenges Task Group for the National Science and Technology Council’s Subcommittee on Disaster Reduction, which produced the Grand Challenges for Disaster Reduction, a 10-year agenda for a disaster-resilient America, published in February 2008.

Raufaste also is a volunteer docent for the conservatories and water garden at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pa. He and his wife, Lynn, have a 300-year-old house in southwest France that is nearing final restoration. They plan to spend several months there annually.

Renita Van Dusen (BFA 1995 Graphic Design), who founded Nita B. Creative in 2002, recently set out to rebrand the firm, implementing a company-wide focus on positioning, publicity, and new business development within the female market.  The end-result, Affina, was launched on Oct. 1 as one of few brand identity firms in the United States that specializes in marketing to women and girls.

Since graduating from ISU, Philip Galiga (BA 1980 Advertising Design) received his MA in art education from Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., and married Ann Janda on Aug. 1, 2008. He is now teaching graphic design, advertising, electronic arts, digital photography, and yearbook/newspaper classes at South Burlington High School in South Burlington, Vt.

Linda Truckenmiller (BA 1975 Interior Design), ASID, of Hinsdale, Ill., received a Chapter Medalist Award from the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) National Examiners Committee in September 2008. This is the highest award presented by ASID to professional members at the chapter level in recognition of outstanding service and significant contributions to their chapter, the society and the profession as a whole.

Alan Wilson (BA 1971 Architecture) was one of several principals that helped to establish the Chicago office of RTKL. He is now the director of the office and co-director of RTKL's healthcare studio. In 2007, Wilson co-authored a new medical district plan for the city of Springfield, Ill.  The plan incorporated one square mile in the heart of Springfield and won the Burnam Prize for planning from the Illinois AIA.

North Dakota's park and recreation director, Doug Prchal (MLA 1977 Landscape Architecture) received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of State Park Directors at the group's national conference in Boise, Id., on Sept. 4. The award is presented annually to recognize a state park director who has demonstrated a long-term record of professional accomplishment in the field of parks and recreation management.

When Someone Very Special Dies and When Mom and Dad Separate, two books by Marge Slorby Eaton Heegaard (BS 1951 Applied Art), LICSW, are among the National Book Network's top 200 sellers. Heegaard is an art therapist and grief counselor. She has written 11 books in the Drawing Out Feelings series for children, which uses the art process to help children understand and express feeling of loss and change, and five books in the Drawing Together series to help adults communicate with children. Heegaard also has written and donated books to be used with child survivors of the Sept. 11 attacks, Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and AIDS orphans.

The collaborative regional design firm, with offices in Des Moines, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kansas City, Mo., focuses on landscape architecture, land planning and urban design. For the past eight years, Ben has been the point man on various tasks for the city of Fort Dodge, including housing subdivisions and the Gypsum City Off-Highway Vehicle Park.

After 31 years, Janelle (BS 1971 Art Education) and George McClain (BS 1971 Animal Science) have sold their fine art gallery and framing studio, Cornerhouse Gallery & Frame, Inc. The gallery/studio cultivated the market of regional fine artists, both established and emerging, and offered truly custom and innovative framing since 1976. Janelle continues her active dealership in fine art including the works of Grant Wood, Marvin Cone and other Midwestern Regionalists.

Jennessa Durrani (BFA 1994 Interior Design), owner and creative director of Celebrate, was included in the Boston Business Journal's 25 Largest Meeting and Event Planners in the Boston area for the fourth year. Celebrate is a marketing promotions firm specializing in putting the "fizz" back in companies' marketing plans.

Edward Mickelson (BS 1977 Landscape Architecture) is one of 20 members of the American Society of Landscape Architects selected for induction into its distinguished Council of Fellows. Edward is a principal and design leader with NBBJ in Columbus, Ohio. 
 
Edward was nominated by the Ohio ASLA Chapter for his lifetime achievements in design across a breadth of markets and geographies. He has led many award-winning projects including university medical centers, campus master planning, and historic landmarks, as well as a variety of projects in Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and China, including the recent Changfeng District Master Plan in Shanghai.

The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) will induct Dean P. Brennan (BS 1970 Urban Planning) of Phoenix, Ariz., into its College of Fellows on April 27 in conjunction with the American Planning Association's 100th National Planning Conference in Las Vegas. After working 13 years as a production manager and supervisor for marketing agencies, Laura (Bishop) Cottril (BA 1985 Graphic Design) decided to leave the industry. She did an apprenticeship for a year and started her own portrait photography business, Laura Cottril Photography, in 2003. She is certified by the Professional Photographers of America and served as president of her regional affiliate in 2007. Cottril was published twice in trade journals (ProPhoto and Rangefinder) in 2007. She resides in Walnut Creek, Calif., with her husband, Tim, and two sons.

John Uban (BS 1972 Landscape Architecture), both of Minneapolis, have been named to the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design. May is an architect with Miller Dunwiddie Architecture in Minneapolis and has nearly 25 years of experience in the profession. He is a member of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, serving on its Minnesota Convention Programs Committee; he also was involved with the Minnesota Design Team, and was a 1996 Young Architect Award winner. He will serve a four-year term on the board as the representative for architects.
  
Uban is a principal landscape architect with Bonestroo, Inc. in St. Paul. He is a registered landscape architect in Minnesota and Iowa, and is a member and past president of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He also chaired the Minneapolis Convention on Urban Environment, and the Minneapolis Tree Advisory Commission. Uban has been a board member since 2004 and was reappointed for his second term as the representative for landscape architects.

Patricia (Buckley) Hibbs (BS 1971 Art Education) retired from the La Crosse (Wisconsin) Public Schools after teaching K-6 art for 35 years. During this time, she also served with the Gifted and Talented programs throughout the district. Patricia will continue to work for La Crosse as a consultant and substitute teacher. Schwartz/Silver Architects is one of 13 recipients of the 2008 AIA Institute Honor Award for its work on the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, La. Principal in charge of the project was Christopher Ingersoll (BA 1981 Architecture). Michael J. Meehan, AIA, LEED AP, and Tim Schroeder, AIA, LEED AP (both BAR 1994 Architecture), are among 10 architects nationwide to receive the American Institute of Architects' 2008 Young Architects Awards.
 
Michael is the professional development manager at BWBR Architects in St. Paul, Minn., where he manages employee education, development and evaluation processes. In the past 10 years, he has taught ARE review seminars for AIA Minnesota and guided more than 400 interns through the graphic sections of the exam. As the 2007 chair of the Young Architects Forum Advisory Committee, Michael helped coordinate the YAF 15 Summit (recognizing the committee's 15th anniversary) and oversaw creation of a 10-year strategic plan. He sits on the board of directors of a civic group formed in 2006 within his historic neighborhood of Northfield and is a member of the Northfield Zoning Code Advisory Group.
 
 
Tim, in 2000 at age 30, became a vice president of Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City and has led many of the firm's sustainability endeavors. He created Iowa's first green-roof project, first LEED-certified school and first LEED-certified public building, and was the recipient of AIA Iowa's first Sustainability Award. Tim also served on the Iowa Architectural Foundation Board and the editorial board for the award-winning Iowa Architect magazine, for which he recently became editor-in-chief.

The awards recognize the Colorado architectural firm that has contributed the most to the profession and set a noteworthy example in both design and leadership within the state over a period of at least 10 years. Nancy Thompson (BFA 2001 Integrated Studio Arts) will earn her MFA in Integrated Visual Arts from Iowa State this year. A collection of 19 oil paintings and pastel drawings, the culmination of her graduate study, is on display now through Feb. 10 in the Pioneer Room of the Iowa State Memorial Union, 2229 Lincoln Way, Ames. The work in this exhibition reflects scenes from the Whiterock Conservancy, a 5,000-acre reserve in the Middle Coon River Valley near Coon Rapids, which has been protected and preserved by the Garst family. Jan Svec (BA 1972 Architecture), Des Moines, editor and project designer for Wood Magazine, and his brother, Ben Svec, of Falls Millwork, Kelley, received an Honorable Mention Award in Custom Woodworking Business (CWB) magazine's 2008 Design Portfolio Awards competition. This recognition was for the pair's custom-designed sanctuary furnishings for the new St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk. The furnishings include the altar, processional cross, ambo, chairs and tabernacle. Details and photographs of the project will be featured in the December 2007 issue of CWB.

She serves as the assistant executive of the Ventura Council of Governments and is a sub on other contracts. Varnado earned a second master's degree from Antioch University Los Angeles in 2004. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons.

A building designed with the help of Dave Leighly, AIA, LEED AP (BA 1985 Architecture), was dedicated by former President Bill Clinton on Oct. 23. Leighly, a project architect and code specialist with BWBR Architects, St. Paul, Minn., was a member of the design team that created the new Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The four-story, 110,000-square-foot facility features unique amenities such as therapy pools, sensory relaxation rooms, women's- and beginners'-only fitness rooms, and a conference center with demonstration kitchen. Leighly has been with BWBR for eight years and is a 20-year veteran in the industry.

Kristi Nelson (BFA 2004 Graphic Design) is a new account planner/senior graphic designer at J.D. Gordon Advertising, Sioux City. In her role as account planner, Nelson researches data to produce advertising ideas and marketing strategies to resolve business problems in innovative ways. As a senior graphic designer, her duties include the concepting, design and production of print, Web, out-of-home, point-of-sale and other promotional elements.
