Gary D. Taylor (MCRP 1996 Community and Regional Planning), assistant professor and extension specialist in community and regional planning at Iowa State University, received the Chapter Presidents Council 2008 Leadership Award for Chapter Professional Development Officer Recognition from the American Planning Association at its national conference in Las Vegas. He was honored for his leadership and dedication to training the professional and citizen planners of Iowa.

The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) will induct Dean P. Brennan (BS 1970 Urban Planning) of Phoenix, Ariz., into its College of Fellows on April 27 in conjunction with the American Planning Association's 100th National Planning Conference in Las Vegas. Dean is a principal planner with the City of Phoenix Planning Department. 
 
Election to Fellowship may be granted to planners who have been longtime members of AICP and have demonstrated excellence in professional practice, teaching and mentoring, research, community service, leadership, and communication. Forty-nine planners from 22 states will be inducted this year.

Mark Koegler (BS 1975 Landscape Architecture), ASLA, has been appointed by the Minnesota Commerce Commissioner to the Minnesota State Designer Selection Board. Mark is a landscape architect and president of Hoisington Koegler Group, a Minneapolis landscape architecture, planning and urban design firm. He is a board member of the Sensible Land Use Coalition

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson recently re-appointed Barbara Templeman (BFA 1970 Interior Design), ASID, to serve a three year term on the New Mexico Interior Design Board
 
After 23 years of professional practice in Minneapolis as founder of Whitney-Bayber Interiors, Inc., Barbara moved to Santa Fe, N.M. In 1993 she founded Barbara Templeman Interior Design. She is currently president of the Interior Design Board and has chaired
Santa Fe Interior Designers Presents, an annual interior design industry event and forum, for the past three years.

Paul G. May (BA 1983 Architecture) and C. John Uban (BS 1972 Landscape Architecture), both of Minneapolis, have been named to the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design. Appointed by the governorn, the board consists of 21 members.
 
May is an architect with Miller Dunwiddie Architecture in Minneapolis and has nearly 25 years of experience in the profession. He is a member of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, serving on its Minnesota Convention Programs Committee; he also was involved with the Minnesota Design Team, and was a 1996 Young Architect Award winner. He will serve a four-year term on the board as the representative for architects.
 
Uban is a principal landscape architect with Bonestroo, Inc. in St. Paul. He is a registered landscape architect in Minnesota and Iowa, and is a member and past president of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He also chaired the Minneapolis Convention on Urban Environment, and the Minneapolis Tree Advisory Commission. Uban has been a board member since 2004 and was reappointed for his second term as the representative for landscape architects.

Patricia (Buckley) Hibbs (BS 1971 Art Education) retired from the La Crosse (Wisconsin) Public Schools after teaching K-6 art for 35 years. During this time, she also served with the Gifted and Talented programs throughout the district. Patricia will continue to work for La Crosse as a consultant and substitute teacher. Patricia and her husband, Paul, have two children, Andrea and Andrew. She places a great value on Iowa State and its global influence on the future of education.

John Burright (BA 1984 Art Education) was named director of bookstore operations at Kansas City Kansas Community College in January 2008. He previously was the art and supplies buyer for the KU Bookstore at the University of Kansas. John and his wife, Diann, live in Lawrence, Kan.

Patricia (Coulter) Ray (BA 1975 Interior Design) is the manufacturer's representative for Constantine Commercial in Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio, and Lexington, Ky. She has been in this position for nearly two years.

African American Architects: A Biographical Dictionary, 1865-1945, edited by Dreck Wilson (BS 1971 Urban Planning), has gone into a second printing. The book is published by Routledge.

Debra Arter (BA 1978 Art Education) recently completed her MFA in visual arts at Vermont College. Her piece 'The Book of Bacon” will be included in the Maine Biennial at the Center for Contemporary Art in August 2008. She credits her time in Ames for the idea of combining printmaking with cured meat.

Thomas Groth (BS 1969 Applied Art) is currently a professor of advertising at the University of West Florida. Before taking this position, he spent 13 years as a professor at ISU. His students have won the National Student Advertising Championship a record four times. Thomas has also received many creative advertising awards and honors, including three solo shows.

Jack E. Leaman (BS 1954 Landscape Architecture & MCRP 1982 Community and Regional Planning), FASLA, AICP, Mason City, has been named a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners, the highest honor given by the organization. He was nominated by the Iowa Chapter of the American Planning Association will be inducted during the APA's national conference in Las Vegas in April. An article on Leaman appeared in the Feb. 18 edition of the Mason City Globe Gazette, available online.

Katie Harms (BAR 2003 Architecture), Cedar Rapids, has been very active in the American Institute of Architects since her graduation from Iowa State. She served as associate director on the AIA Iowa board of directors and last year was appointed associate director on the Central States Region board of directors. She also leads the Central States Region's Emerging Professionals Committee. For the next two years, Katie will also be on the AIA National Associates Committee advocating for all associate members in Iowa. She is employed at OPN Architects.

Steve Davis, NCARB (BAR 1983 Architecture), has been promoted to principal at HMN Architects, where he will head the Justice Division. HMN Architects recently was named one of the top 10 Best Places to Work in Kansas City by the Kansas City Business Journal and consistently places in the top 10 architectural firms in Kansas City as ranked by Ingram's Magazine.

Laurie Olk (BA 1980 Art Education) recently was appointed president of the Iowa Alliance for Arts Education. The IAAE is the umbrella group representing fine arts education organizations in Iowa and is associated with the Kennedy Center for the Arts. Laurie teaches elementary art for the Ames Community School District and has previously been recognized at the state and national level for her arts education leadership.

Steve Jensen (BS 1974 Landscape Architecture), director of planning for the city of Omaha, received Omaha by Design's 2007 Laurels Award. The award, Omaha by Design's highest honor, is presented to an individual, organization or business that has made significant contributions to the creation of great public spaces in the Omaha metropolitan region. Steve was presented the award by Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey on Jan. 28 at Omaha by Design's inaugural awards luncheon.

Schwartz/Silver Architects is one of 13 recipients of the 2008 AIA Institute Honor Award for its work on the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge, La. Principal in charge of the project was Christopher Ingersoll (BA 1981 Architecture). The award is the profession's highest recognition of works that exemplify excellence in architecture, interior architecture, and urban design. All recipients will be honored in May at the 2008 AIA National Convention and Design Exposition in Boston.

Norton Pease (BFA 1995 Art and Design) received a Montana Gold Addy Award for designing a consumer Flash site for the project helphillcounty.org. Norton's work will next be forwarded to the regional competition.

Betsy Kenaston (BS 1999 Interdisciplinary Studies & MCRP 2003 Community and Regional Planning) is now an account manager in the Denver regional office of ESRI, where she works with state and local government users of geographic information systems (GIS) and mapping software.

Carey Brendalen (BA 1983 Architecture) was promoted to president of Architectural Alliance, where he directs the firm's corporate, workplace interiors and science and technology markets. He has been with Architectural Alliance since 1988.
 
Architectural Alliance has contributed to projects such as the Guthrie Theater and the downtown Minneapolis Central Library. The firm provides planning, architecture and interior design services.

Michael J. Meehan, AIA, LEED AP, and Tim Schroeder, AIA, LEED AP (both BAR 1994 Architecture), are among 10 architects nationwide to receive the American Institute of Architects' 2008 Young Architects Awards.
 
Michael is the professional development manager at BWBR Architects in St. Paul, Minn., where he manages employee education, development and evaluation processes. In the past 10 years, he has taught ARE review seminars for AIA Minnesota and guided more than 400 interns through the graphic sections of the exam. As the 2007 chair of the Young Architects Forum Advisory Committee, Michael helped coordinate the YAF 15 Summit (recognizing the committee's 15th anniversary) and oversaw creation of a 10-year strategic plan. He sits on the board of directors of a civic group formed in 2006 within his historic neighborhood of Northfield and is a member of the Northfield Zoning Code Advisory Group.
 
 
Tim, in 2000 at age 30, became a vice president of Neumann Monson Architects in Iowa City and has led many of the firm's sustainability endeavors. He created Iowa's first green-roof project, first LEED-certified school and first LEED-certified public building, and was the recipient of AIA Iowa's first Sustainability Award. Tim also served on the Iowa Architectural Foundation Board and the editorial board for the award-winning Iowa Architect magazine, for which he recently became editor-in-chief.

Gary Adams, AIA (BAR 1972 Architecture), left, and Kevin Scott, AIA (BAR 1979 Architecture), right, are two of the eight partners at Davis Partnership Architects, which received the American Institute of Architects' Colorado and Denver chapters' 2007 Firm of the Year awards. The awards recognize the Colorado architectural firm that has contributed the most to the profession and set a noteworthy example in both design and leadership within the state over a period of at least 10 years. Davis Partnership Architects is Colorado's oldest architecture, land planning, interior design and landscape architecture firm, and employs more than 140 people.

Nancy Thompson (BFA 2001 Integrated Studio Arts) will earn her MFA in Integrated Visual Arts from Iowa State this year. A collection of 19 oil paintings and pastel drawings, the culmination of her graduate study, is on display now through Feb. 10 in the Pioneer Room of the Iowa State Memorial Union, 2229 Lincoln Way, Ames. The work in this exhibition reflects scenes from the Whiterock Conservancy, a 5,000-acre reserve in the Middle Coon River Valley near Coon Rapids, which has been protected and preserved by the Garst family. Meet Nancy and view her work at a public reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, in the Pioneer Room.

Jan Svec (BA 1972 Architecture), Des Moines, editor and project designer for Wood Magazine, and his brother, Ben Svec, of Falls Millwork, Kelley, received an Honorable Mention Award in Custom Woodworking Business (CWB) magazine's 2008 Design Portfolio Awards competition. This recognition was for the pair's custom-designed sanctuary furnishings for the new St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk. The furnishings include the altar, processional cross, ambo, chairs and tabernacle. Details and photographs of the project will be featured in the December 2007 issue of CWB.

Paul McKean Architecture was awarded the Built Honor Award from AIA Portland for its work on the Neal Creek Residence, a modest, green weekend home in Hood River, Ore. Paul McKean (BAR 1992 Architecture), Portland, is co-owner of the firm.

Sarah (Fackrell) Burstein (BA 2004 Art and Design) attended the University of Chicago Law School after graduating from ISU and is working as an intellectual property associate at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. She works on trademark, trade dress, design patent and false advertising work.

Lydia (Sloan) Cline (BA 1982 Architecture) had a textbook published by CENGAGE Delmar titled "Architectural Drafting for Interior Designers." It is the only drafting book on the market that addresses the needs of beginning interior design students. Cline teaches drafting to interior design students at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan.

Debra A. Varnado, AICP (MCRP 1991 Community and Regional Planning), has been self-employed with her own consulting practice for six years. She serves as the assistant executive of the Ventura Council of Governments and is a sub on other contracts. She has also been writing and publishing poetry and visual art, most recently in So To Speak (George Mason University). Varnado earned a second master's degree from Antioch University Los Angeles in 2004. She resides in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons.

Rich Reace, ASLA (BLA 1994 Landscape Architecture), has been named entitlements manager for BSW International, Tampa, Fla. In this role, he is responsible for site acquisition, due diligence, planning, entitlement process, and the construction of commercial infrastructure. He previously served as senior land entitlement project manager for Centex, Dallas, Texas.

A building designed with the help of Dave Leighly, AIA, LEED AP (BA 1985 Architecture), was dedicated by former President Bill Clinton on Oct. 23. Leighly, a project architect and code specialist with BWBR Architects, St. Paul, Minn., was a member of the design team that created the new Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. The four-story, 110,000-square-foot facility features unique amenities such as therapy pools, sensory relaxation rooms, women's- and beginners'-only fitness rooms, and a conference center with demonstration kitchen. Leighly has been with BWBR for eight years and is a 20-year veteran in the industry.

Art Educators of Iowa has named Peggy Bang (BA 1972 Art Education) as Iowa's 2007-2008 Higher Education Art Educator of the Year. As such, she is also Iowa's nominee for the Western Region Art Educator of the Year award from the National Art Education Association. She will be recognized at an award ceremony that will be part of the State AEI Conference in Boone on Oct. 13. More information about the conference is available at www.artedia.org.
 
Peggy teaches at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City. She has served on the board of the MacNider Art Museum, also in Mason City, for the past 21 years. Peggy has also been a member of the Art Educators of Iowa board and was the first statewide coordinator of Youth Art Month. A community advocate for historic preservation and restoration, Peggy was actively involved with the restoration of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Stockman House in Mason City.

Ryan and Amy (Doyle) Savage (both BFA 2000 Art and Design) announce the birth of Jack Ryan. Ryan and Amy met in the drawing studios in the College of Design and say they fell in love while they were supposed to be studying for art history exams at the library. The couple has been married for 6 1/2 years.

Kristi Nelson (BFA 2004 Graphic Design) is a new account planner/senior graphic designer at J.D. Gordon Advertising, Sioux City. In her role as account planner, Nelson researches data to produce advertising ideas and marketing strategies to resolve business problems in innovative ways. As a senior graphic designer, her duties include the concepting, design and production of print, Web, out-of-home, point-of-sale and other promotional elements. Nelson previously was a senior graphic designer for the Shelter Company in Des Moines and a marketing assistant for Long Lines in Sergeant Bluff. She is working on her MBA degree specializing in marketing at Wayne State College, Nebraska.

"Almost Home," "The Popcorn Vendor," and "Warm and Cool"--three paintings by Michael Stohlmeyer (BA 1976 Advertising Design) of Ames--were juried into the 2006 PaintAmerica Top100 Art Competition. Stohlmeyer specializes in painting the Iowa landscape.

Dean Apostol (BS 1977 Landscape Architecture) received the Merit Award in Research and Communication from the ASLA Oregon Chapter. Apostol was the senior editor for Restoring the Pacific Northwest: The art and science of ecological restoration in Cascadia.

Michael R. Broshar (BS Architecture 1978), InVision Architecture, has been named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, an honor awarded to members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession. He is chair of the 2006 AIA National Convention in Los Angeles, is AIA national vice president for 2006-2007, served on the Board of Regents of the American Architectural Foundation, chaired the AIA Continuing Education Strategy Work Group, and has participated on the AIA Long-Range Planning Advisory Group and the AIA Component Relations Committee. In Iowa, Broshar has served as president of AIA Iowa and chair of the Iowa Architectural Foundation. He will be invested in the AIA College of Fellows at the national convention in LA on June 9.
