AIA Iowa/AIA National Scholarship

The Iowa Chapter AIA and the National AIA have joined together to provide financial assistance to architecture students.

$500 - $1000 scholarship.
 
Amount and number of awards vary based upon available funds. Open to students who have completed their Core year and have been accepted into the undergraduate architecture professional program or who are currently enrolled in the architecture professional program. The recipient is to be in good academic standing and a U.S. citizen.  Preference is given to applicants belonging to an under-represented U.S. ethnic group and to applicants who are residents of Iowa.

AIA National/AIA Iowa Merit Scholarship

The National American Institute of Architects and the Iowa American Institute of Architects have joined to provide financial assistance to architecture students.
 
$500 - $1,000 scholarship.

Open to architecture students who will be entering their third or higher year in the undergraduate professional program in the fall 2014.

First preference shall be based on overall academic performance; 2nd preference based on demonstrated professional promise; and 3rd preference based on displayed leadership and participation in school and community activities.

Art and Design Excellence Scholarships

Eligible Programs: First Year Students, Interior Design, Graphic Design, Integrated Studio Arts

Awarded to freshmen, sophomore, junior or senior student(s) who has (have) been in the art department for at least one semester and making satisfactory progress towards a degree and must have 1 semester left in course work. Minimum GPA 3.0. This scholarship includes Benbrook-Lapp, Peterson-Anderson, and Kirke. Students will be considered for all which they are eligible. Selection is made by the scholarship and awards committee in the integrated studio arts, graphic design, and interior design departments.  Students selected to receive this scholarship will be expected to write a one-page thank you letter to the scholarship's donor(s). 

To apply:  Undergraduate Scholarship Form (applications) are available in room 156 College of Design (see Linda Galvin for questions). 

You will need to request two faculty members to complete and return the Scholarships/Awards Recommendation Forms to room 156 Design.  These forms may be picked up in room 156 College of Design.

If you apply for more than one scholarship, you DO NOT need multiple copies of the Scholarships/Awards Recommendation Forms.  Two recommendations from faculty members is all that is needed - thus, only two Scholarships/Awards Recommendation forms need to be submitted for your scholarship application.

A resume will need to be attached to your application.  The resume should highlight your extra-curricular and volunteer activities, honors and awards received.

Arthur R. & Clare M. Merkle Endowment for Excellence in Landscape Architecture

$1000 scholarship awarded to a worthy Landscape Architecture student without regard to class standing and who has a curricular focus in urban design.  Renewable at the discretion of the department chair.  Faculty selects from list of students.

Arvid and Gayle Osterberg Design Scholarship

Eligibility

The $1000 award will be given to a graduate or undergraduate student majoring in Architecture (in even years) and shall be given to a graduate or undergraduate student majoring in any discipline within the College of Design (in odd years). The award may be renewable at the discretion of the College of Design Honors and Awards Board.

Application Procedure

1. Complete the on-line College of Design Scholarship Form http://secure.design.iastate.edu/STUDENTS/SCHOLARSHIPS/application.php.

2. In a single pdf document, submit 1-3 images of your work in the area of inclusive design with a short essay (500 words or less) that explains the relevance of your work to inclusive design. Inclusive design is defined as, design for all people regardless of physical or mental ability or age. Design should not discriminate or disadvantage individuals or groups based on variations in age, size, physical or mental ability, and ethic or cultural background.

 

Initial Selection

Based upon a review of the application information, the award will be made by the College of Design Honors and Award Board. The primary criterion will be demonstrated interest and commitment to the concept of inclusive design.

 

ASI Design Scholarship

The ASI Design Scholarship will be awarded to an Iowa resident, undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Architecture, Interior Design or Graphic Design.  Selection is based on financial need (determined by FAFSA) with preference given to applicants doing work in architectural signage and wayfinding systems.

AUID Scholarship

Eligible Programs: Interior Design

The Association of University Interior Designers (AUID) offers up to three $1,000 scholarships annually. An applicant must be a junior or senior undergraduate student, enrolled full time in an AUID member university's interior design program by the end of spring term. (Students who will have just graduated by the May 31 deadline are eligible to apply.) If there is not an AUID member at your institution but you are interning with an AUID member from another institution, you may apply. Previous winners of the AUID scholarship cannot re-apply for two years after their initial award.  Past winners can be viewed at www.auid.org

Applicants must submit ALL of the following to the scholarship chairperson for their application to be considered. Applications that are missing any of these documents will not be considered.

  1. A cover letter introducing yourself and how you learned of the AUID organization.

  2. A typed application form or resume--listing work experience, honors/awards, extracurricular activities, organization memberships and positions held, and any other pertinent information.

  3. A 500-word essay/personal statement detailing your aspirations and goals for your design degree.

  4. A letter of recommendation from either a present or former employer, a design professional or a professor having direct knowledge of your academic and work performance within your degree program. The recommendation letter must also be received by May 31.

  5. Verification of your undergraduate enrollment with an official transcript.

Selection criteria include essay review by scholarship committee members; academic achievement; extracurricular and community service activities; honors and awards received while enrolled in college; letter of recommendation.

Barbara King Landscape Architecture Scholarship for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Up to eight $2,500 scholarships are awarded annually to fourth-year, fifth-year or graduate students enrolled in the Landscape Architecture curriculum at Iowa State University. Preference given to undergraduates, women and demonstrated financial need. No student may qualify for more than one BKLA Scholarship during undergraduate or graduate study at ISU. (A BLA/MLA student may qualify for one scholarship in each program.) Minimum 2.5 GPA and 2.75 LA GPA. Projects should have a social or ecological advocacy focus. Career Days Leadership Awards

Multiple awards: $100-$1000 (Based on funds available and accomplishments)

The Leadership Awards are available to College of Design students, undergraduates or graduates, who are members of the 2013 College of Design Career Days planning committees. The amount of the award will be decided by the selection committee, based on funds available and the individual's accomplishments outlined in the application.

Submit an essay to designcareers@iastate.edu describing your involvement in Career Days for the current year and how your leadership efforts contributed to the success of the event whether in generating ideas, practicing visionary thinking, using design skills and knowledge in a creative way, engaging peers in productivity, providing technical expertise, meeting deadlines or demonstrating responsibility, accountability, or organizational abilities. In the last paragraph of your essay, include your vision for improving the event for next year.

The essay should be no longer than 500 words and must be typed using a font size no smaller than 11 points. Include your name, e-mail address, ISU ID number, major, year in program, graduation date, your committee and role, and an estimate of total number of hours that you spent working on the event, including meetings attended at the top of the essay. This Scholarship is NOT available for the academic 2014-2015 year.  

This scholarship is open to undergraduate students in the Interior Design Department who will be participating in the College of Design Rome Program. The Interior Design (ID) studio faculty shall be responsible for the selection of the recipient and for the distribution of funds. The ID studio faculty will review applications and select the recipient based on the information submitted by the applicant.

Announcement of recipient will be made on April 17, 2013. The actual monetary award will be presented the following fall semester toward the student's tuition.

Selection Criteria
  1. Majoring in the Interior Design program.
  2. Participating in the Rome Study Abroad Program.

Diane Cone Boody Fine Arts Scholarship

Student selected to receive this scholarship will be requested to write a one-page thank you letter to the scholarship's donor(s).

EDSA Minority Scholarship

Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 and have demonstrated financial need determined by the FAFSA on file with the Student Financial Aid Office.

$500 awarded to a 3rd year Landscape Architecture student, who is an Iowa resident.  Must be enrolled in LA 322 or similar class to show demonstrated excellence in plant materials and planting design. Gary Tartakov Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad

Marvin R. Springer Scholarship

$1,000 scholarship  awarded to a student who has completed the Core Design Program and is applying for entry to either the Community & Regional Planning or the Landscape Architecture degree program.  The award is renewable each year in the CRP or LA program,  up to a total award of $4,000, if a minimum 2.75 GPA is maintained and the student stays in the program.  Demonstrated financial need.  The student must submit a College of Design application, a 300-word written statement, and three letters of recommendation.  Note: Springer Scholars are not eligible for the Dyas Scholarship.

Named after committed planners and long-standing PBCD members, The Robert A. Catlin/David W. Long Memorial Scholarship serves to foster increased interest among African American undergraduates in urban planning as a graduate field of study and as a professional career. The $2,500 scholarship is given directly to the student to pay for expenses incurred during the academic year.
Eligibility Criteria:
The scholarship is available to:
  • Black undergraduate students currently applying to, or who have been accepted into, an urban planning program for graduate studies;
  • Black graduate students, majoring in urban planning or a related field (geography, environmental studies, urban studies, urban policy etc.)

This scholarship is open to undergraduate students in the Interior Design program with a preference given to students participating in the Rome or other international study abroad program.  The Interior Design faculty shall be responsible for the selection of the recipient and for the distribution of funds.  Recipient must show financial need - a FAFSA form must be on file with the Student Financial Add Office.  Student grade point average needs to be 3.0 or higher.  Applicant must demonstrate leadership ability through participation in campus and civic activities.

The actual monetary award will be presented the following fall semester in application toward the student's tuition.  Student(s) selected to receive this scholarship will be requested to write a one-page thank you letter to the scholarship donor(s).

Scott E. Olson Leadership/Community Service Award

Established to recognize a student for exemplary leadership and community service.
$1,250 Scholarship.

Open to undergraduate students in the architecture program.  (For students who apply during their first year of study the award is contingent upon their acceptance into the professional program.)  The recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate financial need.  Preference will be given to students who display leadership and participation in school and community activities.

SOM Prize and Travel Fellowship for Architecture, Design and Urban Design

The SOM Prize is a $50,000 Research and Travel Fellowship which enables an outstanding student to do in-depth research, meet with other professionals in the field, and pursue independent study outside the realm of established patterns. A $20,000 Travel Fellowship will be awarded to a runner-up.

Wendy Marie Noteboom Ewell Scholarship

The Wendy Marie Noteboom Ewell Scholarship has been established at Iowa  State University for the benefit of qualifying art students. Wendy, age 30, died on July 8, 2005. She graduated from Iowa  State in 1998 with a degree in biomedical illustration, studied at the Art Students League in New York City, and went on to establish a career as a successful painter. She exhibited her paintings widely throughout New York, Tucson, Ariz., and Michigan, receiving numerous awards and honors including a Special Opportunity Stipend from the New York Foundation for the Arts.  Her exquisite paintings can be enjoyed on her website at www.wendyewell.com.  

Criteria:  A $1,000 awarded to a junior or senior enrolled in art courses through the Department of Integrated Studio Arts with preferences give to female students studying in the fine arts.  Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0.  Selection will be made by the faculty in the Department of Integrated Studio Arts.

William M. Dikis, FAIA Architecture Service Scholarship

Eligible Programs: Architecture

William M. Dikis, FAIA, has served the public and profession throughout his career in architecture.  This new named scholarship has been established by the AIA Iowa Chapter Board to recognize students that exemplify Dikis' spirit of professional service.  Recipients should demonstrate service to the profession, the Department of Architecture, or the public using their professional education and skills gained as a student of architecture.

Up to $1,200 will be awarded; one or more awards may be given.

Open to both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the Department of Architecture. Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must have demonstrated volunteerism, leadership and service to the public or profession, utilizing professional education or skills.
