Academic Support | ACADEMIC ADVISING

Iowa State University
The Roles of the Academic Adviser and Student

The academic adviser's primary role is to provide academic and support
services for students. The adviser is a resource who is knowledgeable about
university policies, procedures, degree requirements and course offerings.
It is also the responsibility of each student, however, to be knowledgeable
about Iowa State University's policies and procedures and the graduation
requirements for his or her intended major.

The following is a list of the roles and responsibilities for each party as stated
by the university's Undergraduate Academic Advising Handbook:

The professional adviser will assist students with:
  • selecting appropriate courses each semester
  • making schedule changes after registration
  • assessing transfer credits
  • monitoring degree audits so that all graduation requirements are met
  • managing academic and personal concerns
  • referring students to other university support services when appropriate
  • exploring out-of-class opportunities for leadership development
  • understanding university policies and procedures

The student is responsible for:
  • knowing university policies and procedures with respect to registration
and schedule changes, and carrying out those procedures
  • keeping track of any changes (adds, drops, section changes) in the
    schedule
  • knowing the degree requirements of the major, planning schedules to
meet those requirements and monitoring the accuracy of the degree audit.

The key to academic advising is that the student is responsible for his or her own
decisions. The adviser is there to assist the student in navigating the university system.
