Iowa State University

The summer Rome Program offers an array of studio and lecture courses in Rome, intended for students in all areas of design, that is diverse enough to welcome students from other colleges.

Integrated Studio Arts

Students taking this option must choose at least 9 credit hours.

Art 495N, section IT: Art and Design in Europe: Art History

  • 3 credit hours
  • 8-week course offered in June and July

ArtIS 238/338/438/538, section IT: Painting I/II/III/IV

  • 3 credit hours
  • 4-week course offered in June
  • The prerequisite for ArtIS 338 is ArtIS 238 and the prerequisite for ArtIS 438 is ArtIS 338
  • You may take only one of the levels offered

ArtIS 227, section IT: Introduction to Digital Photography

  • 3 credit hours
  • 4-week course offered in July

ArtIS 305, section IT: Integrative Media

  • 3 credit hours
  • 4-week course offered in July

ArtIS 482, section IT: Special Topics

  • 1 credit hour
  • Optional field trip course


Community and Regional Planning

Students taking this option should choose at least 9 credit hours. The CRP courses described below will meet jointly with the landscape architecture courses in the next section.

CRP 416, section IT: Urban Design and Practice

  • 6 credits
  • 8-week course offered in June and July
  • Required

CRP 320, section IT: Urban Form

  • 3 credits
  • 8-week course offered in June and July
  • Required

CRP 391, section IT: Field Travel

  • 1 credit
  • Interim course offered between June and July sessions
  • Optional

Landscape Architecture

Students taking this option should choose at least 9 credit hours. The LA courses described below will meet jointly with the community and regional planning courses in the previous section.

LA 402, section IT: Urban Design Studio

  • 6 credits
  • 8-week course offered in June and July
  • Required

LA 478F, section IT: Topical Studies in Landscape Architecture (Urban Design)

  • 3 credits
  • 8-week course offered in June and July
  • Required

LA 309, section IT: Field Travel

  • 1 credit
  • Interim course offered between June and July sessions
  • Optional


If you are interested in studying in Rome in summer 2011, you must register for Dsn S 301 section 1 in spring 2011. Art & design students must also enroll in Art 494A in spring 2011.  All students may also register for Dsn S 492 section 1 (not IT), a one-credit introductory Italian class in spring 2011.
