Most airlines will allow you to check two pieces of luggage weighing no more than 50 lbs. each, and carry on one or two pieces, typically one small bag, like a purse, shoulder bag, or small backpack, and one full-size carry-on. Be sure to check with your airline about their baggage restrictions, however, to avoid any expensive surprises at the airport. Anything in addition to that (such as a bicycle, extra bags, etc.) will likely cost you extra at the airport. Be prepared to open suitcases and bags for security inspection. Airlines have also become more vigilant about checking the size of carry-on luggage, so be prepared. Again, if you have any questions regarding baggage limitations or additional costs, you should call the airline directly before going to the airport. New security regulations have recently been imposed regarding liquids and gels in carry-on luggage. To avoid having to throw away expensive products, follow the new Transportation Security Administration rules.
Traveling light has definite advantages, particularly for those of you who wish to travel before or after the semester. Backpacks are often a favorite for student travelers. Our suggestion is to take both a large suitcase or duffel bag with strong wheels and a wide wheelbase, plus a full-size backpack (good for making weekend trips, etc.). Suitcases with tiny wheels may work fine in the airport, but such wheels are useless on the stone-paved streets and sidewalks in many European cities.
Cheap luggage also will not likely survive the abuse that bags get on international flights, so pick your bags carefully. Remember that what you pack, you have to carry, and in Europe that can often mean long distances on foot between train stations and hotels or apartments. To pack lightly, some students forego taking toiletries and opt to purchase them in Rome. Most brands of soap, toothpaste and shampoo available in the United States are also available in Italy. Do not pack valuables, medicines or passport in checked baggage. Remember that liquids expand at 30,000 feet in the air: Do not fill bottles of liquid to the top. As an added precaution, pack liquids in sealed plastic bags. We suggest that you have a change of underclothes and personal hygiene supplies in your carry-on baggage, in case your luggage does not arrive with you. Updated 07/30/07-01:21 PID:296 |
