QuarkXPress Tutorial #0007: Fixing Corrupt Printing Preferences

I have identified another problem with printing from Quark. The printing preferences tend to become corrupted somewhat frequently. As in, you can print fine several times, and the next time - nothing prints.

How to check to see if you have the problem:

1. Double-check your print settings to make sure things are setup correctly, then click the "Printer" button.

2. If the "From:" and "to: fields read 1-9999, and you are positive all other settings are correct according to the printing guides posted last week, you may have corrupt preferences.

How to fix it? The only way to fix it is to quit the QuarkXPress application, then delete the Quark preferences. Unfortunately, you will lose any print styles you have created, and any other custom preferences you picked.

1. Navigate to your user home folder and open the Library folder.

2. Open the Preferences folder.

3. Select the Quark folder and drag it to the trash.

4. Empty the trash to delete the folder.

5. Launch QuarkXPress. This will rebuild the PPD profiles.

6. Setup a test print, setting up the printers according to the following document: Basic Quark printing

7. Click the Printer button to make sure that the "From:" and "to:" fields both read "1" (this is true no matter how many pages you actually have). If this is the case, your problem has been fixed. If not, stop by room 433 Design, and I'll take a look at the problem machine.

Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing yet why this happens, which means there is no way to know how to avoid having this happen. The only thing you can do is to continue to always double-check that the Printer dialog doesn't list your document as having 9999 pages.
