Fast Facts
- Ceremonial groundbreaking held Sept. 7, 2007
- Construction began April 2008
- Completion anticipated spring 2009 with occupancy August 2009
- Located on north side of existing College of Design building
- $6.6 million total cost:
- $3.6 million from private gifts, including $1.5 million lead gift by Iowa State alumni Steven and Barbara King
- Remainder from institutional sources
- 23,735 gross square feet
- Completed facility will feature:
- Central, two-story forum surrounded by instructional studios on all sides
- 15 studio classrooms
- Break-out lecture and critique spaces
- Spray room
- First new green-constructed building on campus:
- Instead of air conditioning, natural ventilation and an evening ventilation cycle will cool the studio spaces, which will not be used in summer.
- The building will have a vegetated "green" roof to lower cooling costs, extend the roof's life expectancy, reduce storm-water discharge, and reduce the "heat island" effect. Green roofs provide natural air filtration and create oxygen through photosynthesis. The pavilion roof will be planted with succulent plants and feature 15 varieties of sedum, Limestone Fameflower (talinum calycicum), Chives (allium schoenoprasum) and Hardy Prickly Pear (opuntia humifusa).
- During construction, waste produced by the construction process will be recycled. The project goal is that over 95 percent of all waste generated is recycled.
- Upon completion of the pavilion addition, the College of Design will seek certification from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for implementation of green building practices. The project is currently on track for a LEED gold rating.
- The addition will be built of gray metal panels, exposed concrete and aluminum-framed window areas to provide natural light into the building interior.
- The site around the building will be developed to demonstrate water-retention techniques that allow the water to percolate back into the soils and will delay entry into the storm sewers until well after rain events. Two detention cells will be covered in permeable pavers to create patios. Plantings in the restored site include a variety of trees, woody shrubs, blooming perennials and grasses.
- The pavilion will provide a home primarily for freshman students in the College of Design's Core Design Program and sophomore students in the first year of their professional programs.
- Pavilion and grounds will be a living laboratory for study of sustainable design practices and help establish the principles of environmental stewardship within the collegiate and university culture.
