Sioux City by Design 2009
Dates: June 11-13, 2009 Eligibility: Open to high school students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in fall 2009 as well as spring 2009 graduates
Registration Fee: $100
Registration Deadline: May 18, 2009
Explore the many possibilities of a future in art and design in this two-day workshop, led by faculty members from Iowa State University's College of Design and hosted by the ISU Design West studio in Sioux City's Fourth Street Historic District.
Through a series of activities, students interact with local artists and designers, explore educational and professional paths in art and design, and practice some design of their own through a series of hands-on exercises modeled after the ways in which designers work. Sessions explore a range of art and design disciplines, including studio art, graphic design, interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning.
In addition to introducing these disciplines and career paths, the hands-on projects expose students to design studio culture; typical design processes that address conceptual, aesthetic, environmental and functional issues; independent critical thinking skills; and collaborative design work. The workshop culminates in a public exhibit, designed by student participants, featuring the work produced during the two-day event.
Specific activities include tours of offices and studios, question-and-answer sessions with practitioners and educators, site research in central Sioux City, two- and three-dimensional design explorations, and a final exhibit of student work with response from Sioux City-based art and design professionals. The program is open to high school students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors in fall 2009 as well as spring 2009 graduates. The $100 registration fee includes lunch and breaks each day, transportation for the tours, and all required supplies and materials. At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to take their work with them, along with a sketchbook and a "sketch set" that includes drawing pencils, graphite and erasers. The Sioux City by Design Summer Design Workshop will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 11-13, 2009. Students should plan to be at Design West from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday (for the exhibit and open house). Updated 02/02/09-02:52 PID:1547 |
