Throughout 2009, the ISU Design West Studio will present an informative series of programs on a range of art- and design-related topics. All programs take place at the studio, 1014-1/2 Design Place, Sioux City, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturdays unless otherwise noted.

Graphic Design: exploring the discipline and sample projects
Debra Satterfield
 
Satterfield, a graduate of Morningside College, is an associate professor of graphic design at Iowa State and heads a studio class every year that completes projects for nonprofit organizations throughout the state. In 2008 and again in 2009, she and her students will work locally with Siouxland's Boys and Girls Home to produce visual elements for the group's annual fundraising event. This lecture will include general information about the ISU graphic design program as well as specific information on the project for the Boys and Girls Home.

Community and Regional Planning: exploring the discipline and sample projects
Tim Borich
 
Borich is the associate dean for research and outreach, associate director of the Institute for Design Research and Outreach, and an associate professor of community and regional planning in the ISU College of Design. He also serves as program director for ISU Extension Community and Economic Development. Borich will speak generally about the planning department at Iowa State and also highlight significant outreach projects within the department and college.

Doug Johnston

Johnston is a professor and chair of the Departments of Landscape Architecture and Community and Regional Planning at Iowa State. He will speak about the landscape architecture department in general and present a few projects that highlight his work.

Introduction to ISU Design West/The Core Design Program
Susan Fey, Nathan Kalaher
 
Sioux City received a Great Places Grant in 2007, and ISU Design West was one of the major projects proposed through the grant process. The facility's designer and co-chair of the Great Places Committee, Kalaher will describe how ISU Design West evolved, and program coordinator Susan Fey will talk about programming at the studio.

Additionally, Fey and Kalaher will explain how the Core Design Program works at ISU and present sample projects from each of the classes.

**Wendy Stevenson, regional admissions counselor from Iowa State University, will also be on hand to answer questions.

Architecture: exploring the discipline and sample project
Bruce Bassler
 
An associate professor of architecture at Iowa State, Bassler teaches the Design/Build studio, one of the final studio classes for students before they graduate. In spring 2008, this studio designed and constructed a cabin in South Sioux City's Scenic Park; this spring, a new group of students will complete a second cabin. Bassler will explain the design/build process of the cabins, as well as present information about the ISU architecture department.

Not for the Faint of Heart: Historic Preservation and Community Development
Robert C. Vogel
 
Vogel is the senior historian and managing partner at Pathfinder CRM in Spring Grove, Minnesota. He has nearly 30 years of professional experience in cultural resource management and historic preservation consulting, and has completed cultural resource management projects in 20 states and three foreign countries.

Interior Design: exploring the discipline and sample projects
Lois Warme
 
Warme is an ISU Extension specialist and an associate professor of interior design at Iowa State. She will speak about the ISU interior design program and present some recently completed student projects. Warme has led a number of outreach projects for the College of Design, many of which have involved green and universal design components, and will share some of these experiences with attendees.

Green Design, Sustainability and LEED
Kevin Nordmeyer
 
Nordmeyer is the director of the Iowa Energy Center and has taught architecture in the ISU College of Design. He designed the college's King Pavilion to meet LEED certification standards and is an internationally known authority on sustainable design. Nordmeyer will speak on the importance of sustainable design and how to attain LEED status, as well as about his own work in these areas.  Read more
