Learning & Teaching | FEEDBACK

The College of Design's assessment program is effective and ongoing, facilitating the continuous improvement of student learning. Built into the program's organizational structure are multiple opportunities for feedback.
  • The associate dean for academic affairs coordinates the program with the Academic Affairs Council. The college's Governance Document establishes the Academic Affairs Council as the collegiate assessment committee. Student representatives participate in the business of the Academic Affairs Council.

  • Outcomes assessment activities for the first-year collegiate Core Design Program are coordinated by the Core Design Program director, who, with the Core Design Program Board, assists faculty in determing and assessing desired outcomes as well as making both program improvements and improvements in assessment activities.
Two separate college staff members are conducting formal quantitative and qualitative assessments of the Core Design Program. Copies of recent assessment instruments are attached to the complete college assessment report. Information from these assessment instruments are is collected, reviewed and communicated to the faculty at weekly administrative cabinet meetings, departmental and collegiate faculty meetings, curriculum and other committee meetings. Each of the College of Design's six programs has a representative on the Core Board to coordinate assessment efforts between the Core Design Program and professional degree programs.

  • Departmental representatives on the Academic Affairs Council serve as assessment liaisons to their departments. Within departments, departmental chairs are the key individuals guiding outcomes assessment efforts. Chairs work with faculty program leaders, and coordinate their assessment programs with faculty program committees.  Departmental curriculum committees review and advise the assessment programs.

Departmental governance documents establish their respective assessment committees.
  • The college and departments require syllabi to indicate the measurable objectives for student learning and how student learning will be assessed.

  • The assessment committee coaches individuals and works with unit heads and faculty to develop feedback loops.
