Iowa State University
The Design Exchange and Design Collaborative are learning communities for first-year students enrolled in any major in the College of Design: art and design, integrated studio arts, graphic design, interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, and community and regional planning. They give students the opportunity to develop friendships and get acclimated to the College of Design and Iowa State University.

Design Exchange
The Design Exchange is a year-long living and learning experience open to first-time, first-year students enrolled in any major in the College of Design. All Design Exchange students are enrolled in a one-credit seminar each semester that helps increase understanding of the different design disciplines and career options. The courses also provide insight into portfolio development, sketchbooks, creativity, internships and study abroad, and facilitate clarification of personal and career goals. Students enroll in common courses such as DSN S 131, DSN S 183, and ENGL 150 and 250. Students also participate in academic and social activities arranged by a peer mentor.

The Design Exchange has space for 100 new students who live in four residence hall houses--two for men and two for women, two in Friley and two in Linden. Each house also includes students from Iowa State's six other undergraduate colleges. Thus, Design Exchange students live with others who share a common interest in design but also get to know students from around campus. Participating students share a common studio space and computer lab in the residence hall and have regular contact with in-residence, upper-class design students who serve as peer mentors.

Participants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information, contact:

Design Collaborative
The Design Collaborative is a one-semester, non-residential learning community required for all first-year students enrolled in the College of Design, who are not enrolled in the Design Exchange. The Design Collaborative provides students with the opportunity to connect with both peers and faculty members during the fall semester. Participants expand their knowledge of the various disciplines offered by the College of Design as well as enhance their skills necessary to succeed as design students.
