Meet Your Faculty
Seen and Unseen: Drawing Felt Space will be led by two faculty members from the Iowa State University College of Design: Carl Rogers, associate professor of landscape architecture, and James Spiller, lecturer in architecture.
Carl Rogers
Carl Rogers joined the landscape architecture faculty at Iowa State in 2000. He teaches studio courses at all levels of the curriculum and has taught Design Studies 102, the design studio associated with the College of Design's first-year Core Design Program. His emphasis is on design thinking, design communication and drawing. Carl received the Polster Teaching Award from the College of Design in 2008.
Carl believes the role of the designer is to envision and shape our living environment. During this camp, he will help participants learn how to explore your creativity through artful design and expression. Activities will show how to tap into your creative mind to develop and illustrate an idea, how to build and study and draw and evaluate the world around you.
Carl holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design. He loves listening to music and follows Big Head Todd and the Monsters. He will run his fourth marathon this fall. And, he thinks Wayne Rooney's bicycle kick was the most phenomenal soccer goal he's seen in his life!
James Spiller
James Spiller is a north Texas expatriate who received his Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis and his Master of Architecture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). He previously taught beginning architecture and design at SAIC and now teaches the second-year architecture studios, ARCH 201 and 202, in the College of Design at Iowa State University.
James considers himself an architectural representation nerd as he has studied and continues to research the architectural perspective as a means to express spatial perception. Outside the classroom, he enjoys a good bike ride, a friendly match of soccer, a great summer barbecue, and laughing out loud as much as possible.
