GIS Short Courses - Spring 2008
The ISU Extension GIS Geospatial Technology Program will offer a
series of hands-on short courses in geographic information systems from January through May 2008. All courses will be held at the GIS Graduate Laboratory,
located in room 526 of the College of Design building on the west side
of the Iowa State University campus. All sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m.
and conclude each day at 4:30 p.m.
Courses are designed for community planners and other public officials who use GIS computer software. Those new to GIS can enroll in Essentials of ArcGIS 9.2 as a two-day course or an intensive one-day class. For those with more advanced skills, courses on global positioning systems (GPS), census data, cartography, community development, economic development, and the CommunityViz software package are offered.
Instructors include Alan Jensen, ISU Extension geospatial technology specialist; Nora Ladjahasan, assistant scientist with the Institute for Design Research and Outreach; Neha Mehrotra, lecturer in community and regional planning; and Christopher Seeger, assistant professor of landscape architecture and Extension landscape architect.
Fees are $250/one-day course and $500/two-day course, and include course tutorials, handouts, snacks and beverages.
Lodging and meals are not included. Participants are eligible to
receive continuing education units (CEUs), noncredit units awarded at a
rate of one CEU for every 10 hours of classroom time. There is an
additional $10 fee per course for CEUs.
Advance registration is required, and enrollment is limited to 12
participants per course. Enrollment is not guaranteed unless
registration is accompanied by payment in full. Individuals receive a
10 percent discount if enrolled in two or more courses. If two or more
people from the same organization register for the same course(s) in
the series, each registrant also will receive a 10 percent discount. An organization may
reserve all 12 seats for a particular course for a 15 percent discount.
