| 2008 FAQ | PROGRAM RANKING AND APPLICATION |
|

|
• If you are only interested in one of the programs, does it look bad when applying to not have any second choices? • Does a first-choice applicant take precedence over a 2nd- or 3rd-choice applicant? • If we only apply to one program do we have a better chance of getting in than applying to multiple ones? • Is there any bonus for applying to just one program versus multiple? • Does putting down a 2nd program choice have any negative effect on whether I get my first choice? There is no negative repercussion for applying to multiple programs and no bonus for applying to just one. During portfolio and essay reviews, faculty review teams do not know which program(s) you have ranked highest. They base the reviews only on your work. Your preference ranking only comes into play after the programs have completed their evaluations, when we match you with a program. The system is designed to make the best match possible. • Are our portfolios sent first to our first-choice program? If we get into our first choice, will our portfolio be looked over by our second choice? Each program reviews all applicants to that program. During the review process, review teams do not know how you have ranked your preference for the programs. Reviews are conducted simultaneously by all programs, so your portfolios are not 'sent” from program to program. Instead, all programs review all portfolios in the same location, within a two-week time period. • I am not the best artist. Will I still get into a program? The six programs represent a range of art, design, and planning disciplines. Refer to admission criteria (http://www.design.iastate.edu/CORE/admcrit.php) to see how each program weighs each part of your application package. • How many people are in 102/131 and are applying into the various programs? Throughout the year, we may have between 650-700 students enrolled in the Core courses. Typically, about 400 of those students will complete applications to the professional programs in the college. The overall acceptance rate has ranged from 70 to 77 percent in the last 3 years. The number of applications to each of the programs varies in number, as do available spots in the programs. (See 102 lecture from 4/18/08 for slides from the last 3 years) • Are there a specific number of seats available for international students? No. Reviews of applicants focus on the work in both the essay and portfolio reviews. Your country of origin is not considered when programs evaluate your work. • Do your grades/credits count if they are transferred from another school? This may vary according to your individual situation. Speak to your academic adviser to understand exactly how your credits and grades will apply to your particular situation. • I tried to register once to receive my number. I saw you needed to submit a complete essay in there. Can you register for a number first and then submit your essay? Or do they have to be at the same time? In order to complete your application, you have to submit an electronic version of the essay. Your application number is for organizational purposes and will not affect the review of your materials.
