Individual and Cultural Differences

Multicultural perspectives encourage the artist or viewer to examine cultures in depth and to make cross-cultural comparisons.

In these projects produced by young high school students two depictions of the opposed yet related counterparts of Yin and Yang are shown. Individual differences in the artists' styles, methods and content choices vary interpretation of theme. Cultural differences are revealed in the selection of symbols. The ink drawing on the left shows interlocking forms inspired by the ancient, traditional Yin Yang symbol representing the balance of opposites in life. The Pepsi cans illustrate opposite forces of expansion and contraction using a modern commercial symbol.
