Cross-cultural Commonalities and Interconnectedness

Margaret Mead has observed that three of the most apparent themes across time and between cultures are the human body, family and friendships. Humans are shown by Ken Heyman in a variety of contexts in Meads book The Family.

 

 

The above images show humans desire for depiction of themselves and each other as a favorite subject recurring throughout art history. The elegant Benin head was created using the lost wax casting process to capture intricate detail. The portrait by August Renoir on the right used colorful feathery brushstrokes capturing the effects of light as well as the mood of the young woman.
