The ISU Department of Architecture offers the professional Bachelor of
Architecture degree, accredited by the National Architectural
Accreditation Board (NAAB). This degree consists of one year
in the collegiate pre-professional Core Design Program,
followed by four years in the professional Bachelor of Architecture
(B.Arch) degree program.
Any student offered admission to Iowa State University is eligible to enroll in the Core Design Program and, after successful completion (30.5 hours), may apply to the professional B.Arch program (134 hours). Several factors determine admission into the professional program: the applicant's performance in the first year program, previous high school record, portfolio and essay evaluation, and availability of resources in the department. The B.Arch degree from ISU provides the foundation for becoming a licensed, registered architect. A registration certificate indicates that one has completed architectural school, spent the minimum time as an intern-architect, and then passed a comprehensive examination designed to measure professional judgment and ability. Because architects directly affect the public health, safety, and welfare, registration is an assurance that an individual can practice the profession responsibly. The Iowa State Board of
Architectural Examiners defines the practice of architecture as
follows:
"The practice of architecture includes any professional service, such as consultation, investigation, evaluation, planning, and design, or responsible observation of construction of buildings, or related structures and projects, or the addition to or alteration thereof, wherein the safeguarding of life, health, or property is concerned or involved."
